Our view: Re-election joy sullied
November 9, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
On Tuesday, President Obama took the popular vote, dominated the Electoral College and earned re-election. The historic moment was one of affirmation and triumph, and it was met with unbridled joy from coast to coast.

True that and me either….and my fav whine and deny is~~ there is no racism today except against whites and they’re all being persecuted for even trying to discuss racism….
Stating a indisputable fact of common sense that whites don’t have same perspective or reality as blacks will put this town in utter uproar how unfair that really is to pick on whites all the time and that it’s racist……but any examples of real racism, why folks are just being too sensitive…~shakes head~

This is FALSE FALSE AND FALSE!
The US Census shows that 78.1% of the population in the US is white (63.4% identify as White but not Hispanic). White Americans are the majority in forty-nine of the fifty states, with Hawaii as the exception.
By any measure, whites are still the majority. The second and third largest ethnicities are Hispanic (some of whom identify as white) at 16.7%, and African American at 12.4%. Whites still dominate the population and the vote.

When whites can’t get service because are white at customer service lines, when whites are followed in every store go to by security because the stereotype of whites is they are all thieves and criminals. When whites can’t go anywhere without getting pulled over by cops because they’re white and a justice system throws in jail and assumes guilty just because are white. When we’re constantly bombarded in all media the image that all whites are criminals, thugs, low lifes, stupid, and drug dealers. When whites can’t get a job or better rate on car loan because are white. When every time they try to point to the inequality and injustices they’re shouted down and told are whiners and just playing race card…….
Then….then…you can say the shoe is on the other foot…

Check birth records Sam. 50% of the births in the US are non-white. I’m not that far off. It’s just around the corner.

I respect your opinion Sam, and that of Fastone. After doing some reading and looking at the links you posted I can see I spoke prematurely. It’s ahead of us though. Will I live long enough to see it happen? I don’t know … I might be pushing up daisies by 2041, the year which was projected after the 2010 census. Does it bother me? No … I don’t care who I live next door to as they long as they are good people.

We live in an Immigrant country. The #1 ancestry in the US is GERMAN (15.2%). #2 is Irish (10.8%). Only 2.8% are Native American, so most Americans come from immigrants. The vast majority of immigrants work hard and are committed to their families. I’m sure those of English descent were shocked when all the Germans showed up in the US en masse starting around 1800.

The symbolic lynching of the first African-American president on the morning of his reelection day is truly disgusting. Given Duluth’s history it is even more shameful. I really hope they can find and arrest the knuckle-head racist(s) so we can find out what motivated them to commit this horrific crime.
I won’t be surprised if the perpetrators turn out to be consumers of right-wing media—what former Bush speechwriter David Frum calls the conservative entertainment complex. Inflaming irrational hatred toward President Obama is something that these “entertainers” do everyday. I have actually heard (out of morbid curiosity) callers to a local AM radio show accuse the president of not being born in America and that he actually hates America. According to these deranged callers, Obama is the Manchurian candidate. When callers make these outrageous statements, they get no push back from the host (a former Marine). I have to believe that the host either agrees with the insane accusations, or that he is just too gutless to confront them because he knows his audience and he doesn’t want to offend their sensibilities—the kind of sensibilities that might motivate a person to lynch a president in effigy.

So the tu quoque logical fallacy justifies the irrational hatred of the President? Lame. There is a huge difference in the level of magnitude of the hatred—I don’t remember any Democrats questioning Bush’s citizenship. And, if there were people who made a living by inflaming hatred of Bush, they weren’t the leaders of the party. The wing-nuts behind the microphones are the leaders of the Republican party (just ask David Frum). There is nothing on the left that even resembles the conservative entertainment complex. DanH, I think it is kind of sad and pathetic on your part that you would would tacitly defend the inflaming of hatred by saying that “they did it too.”

Obviously the hanging effigy was disgusting. But I am truly ignorant as to why the “Mo-Bama” quote is shocking. Is there a way for someone to explain this to me on the message board? Honestly, I am an educated and reasonably intelligent person, but clearly naive enough to have missed some crucial innuendo that makes his shocking.

If it isn’t true, refute what I wrote with evidence. You won’t be able to, but I would like to see you try. I believe a lot of the hatred of the President is due to racism, that can not be said of the (mild in comparison) hatred that some on the left had towards Bush. What compares to the insanity (and the racism) that is birtherism? I will give you a hint—Nothing. Dan, go ahead and keep defending the indefensible. It just marginalizes you and the media outlets you defend. You are on the wrong side of history and the election results prove that if you all continue down the road you are on, you are going continue to lose in the future. Having only angry irrational old white men solidly in your camp isn’t going to get you very far, but good luck with that.

Dan, if that was what you were trying to do, you failed pretty miserably. “Making up things?” Like what? Did some wing-nut lynch the President in effigy or was that made up? Did I hear callers to a local radio show claim the president wasn’t born in America or do you think I made that up? Did I hear a gutless host not challenge these lies or do you think I made that up? Dan, you are not very good this. Maybe you should stick to calling that gutless host, you’ll never have back anything up there with facts.

Rats! I hate it when I write something in my head but it doesn’t doesn’t make it to the page correctly. I meant to write “you’ll never have TO back anything up there with facts.” And, I should of used the word “those” instead of “these” before “lies.” The argument remains the same.

Could we find some section of the state to give to these folks and let them secede??

Was LMAO…lawdy, not very bright. I suggest they move to Texas as they have GOP official there starting campaign to secede from union and I say with Texas, please let them! It would be perfect for these folks, it’s actually a published official policy of the GOP in Texas and am not making this up…to “oppose critical thinking skills”
1- These folks that started and are signing this petition clearly belong in Texas as clearly lacking critical thinking skills. 2- Forget the fact that would never let secede from Union, forget the history of last time that was tried these fools never heard of apparently, they aren’t even a majority in Minnesota forgawdsakes 3- and they have no case and no real grievance or cause…a vague insinuation with nothing to support it and no evidence …just vague generalization…. well…because gee whiz, they just didn’t like the majority voted overwhelmingly to NOT support a sociopath and campaign of lies apparently and policies that went against almost all but the top 2% best interests…
They can’t even get quote right…it’s…”Those that sacrifice liberty for security, deserve neither” Benjamin Franklin…which also has not a dayum thing to do with their silly petition or election..but it would pertain to Homeland Security and Patriot Act that conservatives defend…SMH!! …but the one the conservatives should use as guiding light is clearly…”For whatever anguish to body or spirit it may cause, I must know the truth”…Patrick Henry
We’re actually witnessing I think the very demise of GOP…they’re having a complete meltdown. They’ve all been so played with falsehoods and fear mongering they think the world is going to end and now that Obama did win, they’re losing it and coming unglued because they were all hyped up on these lies and fear mongering……a guy in Florida committed suicide because Obama won so I guess he showed him ~rolls eyes~, a woman ran over husband with car because he didn’t vote for Rommney, Teanut leaders are calling for Civil War, GOP officials and obiously others are calling for states to secede, Teanut officials are calling for a revolt, Trump has demanded they start a revolution, Rove completely lost it on TV on election night and some are posting on Social Media Obama should be assassinated to save the country…and have read about 100 posts from conservatives on other news sites and they’re really losing it, they think this country will come to crashing halt, Obama is going to make us a communist state within months as one Teaparty leader claimed…and that’s because that’s the type of nonsense they were fed…and Rommney came out today and claimed he lost because Obama gave the Blacks gifts….WTH? They just don’t get it and they’re all in denial..and it’s actually pathetic in way to witness…
These people supported a party with policies that were against the poor, blacks, hispanics, women, gays, elderly, disabled, children, the young, the environment and did so by promoting their positions with anger and hatred…and their shocked everyone wasn’t all down with that?
There was a clear message sent last week that we’re all sick and tired of them waving our Flag and calling it theirs…we want it back…and STILL…they not a clue what are talking about….

@fastone I don’t see the demise of the GOP. But I do hope that this election perhaps shocks them into trying to find common ground with the Democrats. I also kind of hope that the election gives the Democrats a bit more spine to stand up to the GOP. I guess we’ll see.

Rick~ Oh, come on, one can hope and have his dreams..LOL… and then a party of some rational people at least can start a new party that doesn’t hate everyone and isn’t against everything but rich corporations and fill the void…just trying to be optimistic here…LOL.
I do hear ya’ and thought that also last week that maybe they’ll come to senses…..Boehner came out and claimed that the Healthcare was law of land and they wouldn’t fight it anymore…he also had another press conference and said there is no longer any tea party influence in the house…but then as quickly as they seemed to be coming around…they did an about face over weekend and are back at going to be the stick in muds and obstructionists against healthcare and the tax cuts and are going to be obstructionists again while we face another finacial cliff…wow, that didn’t last long…and then Rommney claiming that Obama won because he gave Blacks stuff…that takes the cake…they do just need to go away…they’ve trashed this country our constitution and our economy and are all crazy haters and certainly none of them has a dayum clue what they’re even talking about or why they support it…..they don’t even clearly have a single clue what and who America is they’re so out of touch…and that right there is why they lost and they don’t get it…
It does seem that Obama gotten a lot more bold with his new political capital.. and he dayum well should be…he carried the votes because the GOP just too scary and creepy for rational folks…but a lot of folks not been happy that he’s been a little soft against all the resistance been thrown at him and he’s tried to compromise…hopefully now he’ll put his foot down, he already has a different demeanor if caught his handling on Rice today…
I think the safe bet is the GOP is too far gone to come to senses or to turn around the sinking ship….and people clearly and finally get that Repubs been lying and that our mess is because of them and that they refuse to address that and accept responsibility for it..whatsoever..a poll today said if they don’t reach a deal and we go over financial cliff..that they’re going to be stuck with the blame so they really need to wise up…

Let’s see…Conservatives and GOP policies support Homeland Security, harsh immigration laws, the Patriot act, are anti-gay and refuse to grant them equal legal rights, anti-poor, anti-healthcare, anti-womens rights and want to have government control over their bodies, and want to dilute and control our most basic right and foundation of our democracy, the right to vote.. so now smarty…can you GUESS…WHO are one’s that are against the Constitution?
I know you’ve been hammered on forever by the GOP that Democrats are the spend and tax party and that the GOP is all about cutting spending and shrinking government and less taxes….but have you ever even bothered to check to see if is true? Because the truth and the facts are it’s completely the opposite…the GOP has increased our debt 2.5 times more then the Dems, they’ve ALWAYS since Reagan increased spending and increased size of government and in fact since Reagan have raised taxes on middle class 12 times to protect giving the wealthy and corporations tax breaks.
Yeah, the GOP been telling you they’re great with economy and fiscally conservative…but reality is they’re taking your money by adding to the debt load you and your children will have to pay down while giving technically, your money to their rich buddies..they’re picking your pocket and you’re supporting it..how special..of course they’re going to tell you they’re great with your money…am sure Bernie Madoff made same promise to his investors too….oh, and our two greatest recessions of our lifetimes that twice wiped out the middle class’s nest eggs…were because of GOP laize faire with banking regulations …while out spending like a drunken hooker with a clients gold card…
Seriously …what do you think totally caused the worst economic collapse of our economy that required all the bailout spending to prevent from total disaster in 2008? BEFORE Obama even elected President! That was Obama’s fault right?
It’s bad enough that conservatives not a clue about economics and really suck at basic math and budgets but it’s pretty inexcusable that can’t even keep significant current events straight…

Well said fastone. Couldn’t agree more. America is still reeling from the Bush administration. There is no way any President, Democrat or Republican, could undo 8 years of poor policy in 3 1/2 years. Smartimus have you noticed any ideological shifts in each party since the 1800s? I mean, I am not sure if our modern day 2 party system had any bearing on slavery or not. Please indulge me with your extensive scholarly research on American history. Are present day bible belt white Southerners really taking credit for freeing the slaves 150 years ago? They really should right? Didn’t John Kerry get 88% of the African-American vote in 2004? What were they thinking, don’t they know that the Bush/Reagan loving Republican Party was their champion all those years ago? Get real man.

Please tell me what needs of a person that is not white are different than a person that is white? The basis for voting democrat is more can then be bled from the federal largess and preference given for not being white. Southerners seceded from the union when Lincoln, a republican was elected. Southerners were democrats for many years afterward. Explain the embrace of the democrats for Robert “sheets” Byrd and the anti-minority history of Al Gore’s racist democrat father, to name a couple of the many other racist democrats.

I’m not really even sure what you’re trying to ask Smartimus, but after reading some of your posts since my last one, I don’t see a point in trying to find out. Your concept of reality is completely bogus and you ignore facts when it suits you. The ideological shifts which happened years ago are not even hardly debatable. You can’t possibly think 21st century Democrats = Confederate slave owning KKK members. Go read a book.
