Our “communist-leaning” professor is a good example of why some of us are wondering what’s being taught at our institutions of “higher” learning. Market forces of supply and demand determine incomes and availability. “Progressive” attempts to rewrite their own equations have many consequences–some intended, others unintended. Before we launch out to redefine how much someone should earn in someone else’s employment, let’s start with the colleges. I recommend moving the decimal point one position to the left (appropriately) on their annual compensation. That might allow others than the “elite” to afford a post-secondary education.

Tony,
Well, sir, your gross assumptions are WRONG. In my case, I grew up in northern MN, had five siblings–my father had one modest income. I worked throughout high school and SAVED–didn’t buy any expensive vehicles, didn’t have a lavish lifestyle. Went to U of M, on my own money–except for the $300 National Student Defense loan I took my senior year. To get that I had to sign a paper stating I would not promote the overthrow of the U.S. gov’t! Paid the loan back within a year I worked two jobs throughout college–some on OT! Yeah, there were sacrifices–bigt deal! My GPA in Engineering was a modest 2.7-0-whoop! If you want something, get off your ass and find a way to get it done. I know there are many other hard-working folks out there who sacrifice and get it done through hard work. Stop complaining. We’re just about to reach the tipping point, where there are not enough working folks to carry those who whine.

Tony,
You missed all of my points and your arguments are not data-based. I’m willing to bet you consider yourself progressive–that’s exactly the image that I’m getting from your twisted logic. Life is not an entitlement. You get what you make of it. If you want to be a victim, so be it–it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. If you want to develop yourself, this is the greatest nation on the earth to do it. I cannot think of many places where people are crawling over and under fences to get opportunity. Entrepreneurs abound in all races and walks of life. Dumbing-down opportunity for “equality” never will work. Destroy incentive, as your thinking does, and you have a socialist society. If you want one, there are plenty–just go abroad.
I have four children who all are successful in life–two who went to college, two who didn’t. The one’s that went to college took out loans–and paid them off. I don’t make a six-figure salary, either. In fact, the one with a higher income never went beyond high school. It’s called initiative. None of them are “victims”, none of them had an easy life. They worked for what they got–part-time jobs, loans, etc. I didn’t give them a dime for their post-high schoool education—but it appears they got my message that: Life is not “fair”, you earn each step along the way, you are loved by those that care about you, and you can make a difference if you get off your ass and are willing to work for it. Take whatever advice from this as you wish–By the way, I graduated college in 1973, so you may have to adjust your dim view of me.

Tony, your ignorance of the engineering field and the effort it takes to earn an engineering degree is embarrassing. I’d wager that you couldn’t make it even half way through the battery of calculus, physics, and dynamics courses before falling flat on your face. And for all of MC’s efforts in earning his degree, you’d have him earn what an unskilled or semiskilled worker would make? Karl Marx would be proud of you! Were it not for the skill of an engineer, your water wouldn’t flow. Your car wouldn’t exist, and this wonderful thing called the internet is but a dream in somebody’s mind.
You whine about the grants and in-state tuition, but that sounds more to me like an excuse for you not having accomplished anything. I guess when you can’t compete with the best and brightest, you, like Obummer, demonize those who have more than you. Sad.

Tony,
Liberal or progressive–no difference. I’m afraid you drank too much of the “kool-aid” to understand what I’m talking about. So you think I’m selfish? Once again, you’re showing your ignorance, lack of data–perception seems to be all that matters, apparently. Let’s just agree to disagree–but do me one favor: Don’t get elected to political office, there’s too many of your type in MN already. No need to reply, I won’t be corresponding further.

Since you seem to have such an affection for all the liberal/progressive programs, exactly just how much of your own income have you donated to them? You seem pretty willing to spend other folks’ money, but I somehow suspect that your not so forthcoming with your own cash.

Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, Vladimir Lenin and other tyrants would be pleased to know that their ideology has even become the rallying cry for the democrat party in the former United States, soon to be known as New Zimbabwe.
