Cottage Grove to consider allowing chickens, ducks on urban, residential lots

After spending her formative years on a rural Minnesota farm, grocery store eggs just won’t cut it for Rykna Olson and her family. That, she said, is why they keep three chickens housed in a coop the size of a small garden shed tucked behind their Jeffery Avenue home in Cottage Grove. Earlier this year, the Olsons were warned by city code enforcers and then ordered to get rid of the fowl after neighbors complained to the city’s Community Development Department. Continue Reading

OK… to stay civil and to avoid personal attacks, drive by the Olson property and make up your own mind.

I think we should allow it, but I am a rebel. And to make it easier on the poor code enforcement officer, fire him, then it won’t be so difficult on him.

They knew it was against the current laws when they moved, to not have chickens on the property…. Deal with it. Move to a location, maybe…. a farm?….. and have chickens. Hey, even have cows if you want! It’s magic….

What’s the difference between having 3 dogs or 3 chickens? Within reason they should be allowed.

Can’t compare dogs and chickens, Buzz. I brought this up at the planning commission meeting. Dogs are domesticated animals that live inside; chickens can be, but they are outside. I’m not against the idea, but it can’t be compared. We gave staff direction to talk about location of a coop on the property, what it would look like, and enforcement to ensure the animals were cared for. So, we discussed no slaughtering or selling of the chickens or their eggs from the property; no roosters whatsoever; and keeping the yard clean of droppings.

I beg to differ on the similarities-as with any animals kept by humans, if they’re responsible owners things will go smooth with the neighbors. If not, that’s when the problems start whether dogs, cats, birds or whatever.
