Nolan takes N.E. Minnesota’s 8th District seat back from GOP
November 6, 2012 at 7:52 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Democratic challenger Rick Nolan pulled off an upset in Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District, with incumbent Rep. Chip Cravaack conceding about 1:15 a.m. today.

It isn’t a party thing, Chip was a professional Parasite, and the Northland is better with out him. Let’s hope Nolan can do a better job.

I think Smartimus is either Hugh J or DFL Duluth Exposed. What do the rest of you think? Anyway, just another “little chipper” adding their two cents worth.

This just shows that, if you can get the people out to vote, they tend to vote for the more progressive candidate. In 2010, Cravaack defeated Oberstar 133,486 to 129,084, but this election Nolan defeated Cravaack 192,498 to 160,788. This illustrates the obvious. Republicans are a smaller but much more vigilant minority group. Whereas Democrats have a much wider base of support, it’s just not as strong. Still, it makes me wonder how badly Cravaack would have lost if 100% of the 8th district voted.

Two years ago I predicted this very result. I knew Cravaack would be one and done. I wonder how long it will take to put that ficticious house up for sale? Cravaack would always be viewed as an outsider, he wasn’t ” one of us”. It must be a sad day for Hugh J and DFL Exposed Duluth. Speaking of which, boy you sure exposed the DFL Party. I think you’re tactics and ridiculous takes actually backfired on you. You woke a sleeping giant and the people got out and voted. Whether you like it or not, the 8th Dist. has always been DFL country and probably always will.

Compared to a lot of congress people Cravaack did a good job reaching out to his constituents with all his town halls and stuff. He did it under budget, and he was honest and cordial for the most part. Despite some differences of opinion from time to time I think he did a fine job and can be proud of that. Congratulations to Congressman Nolan.

Now Chip should take a lesson from this and go back to where he was raised and get elected as a home town boy, and he can go back to being a house father and so his sons will have a parent around. I wonder where her job will take her next and how soon they will move? Bye Chip- been waiting 2 years to say this.

The same basic group of voters that knew it was time to get Oberstar out, and did so the last round with their votes, are the same group of voters that felt Cravaack failed bad enough to not want him back….. and said so with their votes in this round.
Simple. The independent thinking voter still can make a difference I guess.

I don’t agree that “independent thinking voters” are necessarily these moderates who vote one way one election season, then another way the next. Cravaack didn’t win in 2010 because of a huge appeal to swing voters. He won because Oberstar didn’t turn out the votes from the left. Cravaack got elected in the election with the lowest voter turnout since 1994 or possibly earlier (I couldn’t find the stats pre-96).
Anyway, I’d say the independent thinking voters you speak of make up the 33% of progressive voters this year that didn’t vote in 2010… People who believe our political structure is fundamentally broken, but still vote when it counts. The right-wing on the other hand is fully convinced that our system is valid and fight tooth and nail to manipulate it as much as possible.

I don’t blame voters for putting Cravaack in two years ago…it was probably time for some change. Constituents decided to give a Republican a chance for the first time in decades — it was an experiment. It clearly wasn’t working, so voters threw the bum out. It’s democracy at its finest.

Also, 2/3rds of new votes, i.e. votes that didn’t exist in the 2010 election, went to Nolan. I wonder if this high voter turnout will discourage Republicans from proposing another highly contentious amendment based on discrimination next election cycle. Or perhaps it will just ramp up the right’s efforts toward voter suppression as has already been done in Florida and Ohio.

“Likely yourselves when Nolan- real winner, there btw- derails any chance for the mining industry to make a comeback”
The permitting process for the mines will move forward, just as it was doing before Chip came along.
No one person will be able to stop it any more than Chip had any ability to speed it up.

If you listen closely, I’m sure you’ll hear the great wailing and gnashing of teeth that’s going on in some homes today.
Tomorrow, it will be all about how these elections were ‘stolen’ and fairy tale stories of fraud will abound.

I think the voting was heavy because the 2 ammendments brought people out more than the candidates. We will never know if it would have been another low vote had it not been for the ammendments.

GOOD! Craavack had NO business what-so-ever, in this position! No background in politics, nothing, and he rips it away from a man who had been doing it for 18 terms! That election made me want to THROW UP!! I was embarrassed to say I was from Minnesota, when we took a stay at home daddy, with no background in politics and placed him in this high of an office. I thank god that Nolan decided to run again and that Craavack didn’t run without a challenger, like Ness did in his last election. Thank you Minnesota!

I’m happy to see that Chip’s special needs son will once again have a full-time, stay at home dad.
I think he’ll benefit greatly from it and so will MN. Win/Win.

Considering how relatively close Bachmann squeaked by in her election, and other Tea Party types got beaten in other states, perhaps the Tea Party want’s to rethink their platform and stop being against everything and propose practical detailed solutions to the problems. I was heartened that the effect of the Tea Party seems to have waned. Now if Michelle can just be beat the next time around………………

It seems to me that is all you can digest. That you and those like you get an equal say creates many challenges for those with more sense and compassion. You are being taken advantage of by powerful greedy men and it costs the rest of us.

What I fond odd was all of the candidates win or lose showed up for their speech with their wives, except for Chippy who had some big fat bearded guy in a sweater behind him. Where was Mrs.C? Could they have split explaining why she went out east, he sold their home and bought another and always talked about his time here and DC but never with his family in MD?
