Jersey Shore is rich in intracoastal waterways. Much of the Jersey Shore has been environmentally compromised by overdevelopment. But in the Pinelands there are very wild brackish estuaries, creeks and streams edged by Atlantic Cedar and home to bald eagles. Barnegat and Waretown are towns along Barnegat Bay sheltered somewhat by the barrier Long Beach Island and the Island Beach peninsula.
