“State Farm uses claims data and state licensed-driver counts from the Federal Highway Administration to calculate the odds of hitting a deer.”
EXTREMELY faulty methodology. Typical “Insurance industry” shameful junk science.
Claims data does not reflect actual deer strikes. Actual deer strikes are going to be higher than the number of insurance claims, because many folks don’t have insurance that would cover deer damage.
The number of licensed drivers is completely irrelevant. The number of vehicle-miles driven in a year would be more valid. Better still is vehicle-miles driven during the times and places that deer are most likely to be near the roadway.
Once again the Insurance Industry fails to provide trustworthy data. It’s so common that I don’t understand why people would pay attention to the Insurance Industry’s so-called “studies”.
