Mayville residents suggest co-op expand outside of town
October 24, 2012 at 2:40 pm in Grand Forks Herald
The ad in the Herald and the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead, listed 14 reasons a grain elevator facility built at least one mile north of the city would make financial sense for the business. It cited ongoing issues with dust, debris and noise since the elevator’s last expansion in 2006.

Do these people think it’s easy to just pick up a 1.4 million bushel facility and drop it somewhere that they think is convenient? Seriously, what a joke.
How about accepting the elevator as the economic enhancement to the community that it actually is?

Churchs Ferry had a smaller elevator that was half the size of the Mayville one. They decided to replace it with a brand new elevator that is 1.7 times the size of the Mayville one. So your comparison is invalid.
And, BTW, the new one was built at Niles instead of Churchs Ferry because of high water, not because someone didn’t like it anymore.

I never posed a question about if an elevator was moved or why. The Churchs Ferry one wasn’t. They replaced an old, small elevator with a brand new larger one. And the new one was built at Niles out of necessity, because their original site was going to be flooded out.
Also, if you’ll reread my original post, the old elevator was half the size the Mayville one. Not 1.7 times the size, like the new one.

The site of the old elevator at Churchs Ferry in now under about 6-8 ft of water. The ground under the elevators were getting soft because of high water and the elevators were starting to lean.

Richard Moen needs to get this done, be extra sensitive to the dust issue and expand this facility in the City of Mayville. This will be a win, win, win for this great city. Fight (unless you can completely ignore) this non-profit organization, but continue to be nice, in spite of them.

How long has the elevator been there?
If the elevator was there (in some shape or form) before a house was built, then the builder of the home should have
realized that the elevator would eventually cause problems (dust, noise, truck traffic, etc.).
Do not build next to the airport and then complain about the plane noise. Same for grain elevators.

The railroad came to Mayville in 1880, which is likely when the elevator was built. It would be a long stretch to say that anyone still there has ever seen the town without the elevator.

Both of you got a thumbs down. The Hibbing move started in 1919 and ended in 1968. Not even close to an accurate example.
As for you thinking I’m an elevator employee, I’m not, but it is funny that you jump to that idea when someone is willing to stand up to you. I’m in Grand Forks, and just a 3rd party with an opinion. Everything I’ve written above can also be found by anyone else if they’re willing to Google.

This is very bad publicity for a town promoting itself as a viable bedroom community for Grand Forks. However, having lived there the community bickering we are seeing unfold is no suprise to me.

Amen Tom… Mayville has always like to argue. It always amazed me that they ever combined the old school districts of Mayville and Portland.

I understand the issue that the elevator has expanded and the capacity is being pushed to it’s max. Thus creating more noise and dust. But you live in an agricultural community! Deal with it!

Being an abusive neighbor since the beginning is no excuse for being a abusive neighbor in the future.

In 1960 Grand Forks ended at 17th Ave South and there was a dairy farm at that corner. 20 years later it GF ended at 32nd Ave south. During those 20 years there was continued farming of small grains and potatoes by Ryan and Greenberg farms. At that time the residents who lived on GF’s most southern reaches complained about the dust from farming operations. When Shreoder JH was built it was 1 mile out of town. Then the town built out and surrounded this school and some residents in the area felt that the people farming should quit making a living so close to town so didn’t have to put up with the dust of agriculture that they intruded into while expanding the city of GF. Farming didn’t encroach on GF by expanding their operations north towards GF; GF went south towards farming operations south for 20 years and expected those people to stop making a living to suit them.
