Editorial: Peterson is choice for the 7th District
October 23, 2012 at 12:26 pm in West Central Tribune
The 7th Congressional District, including much of west central Minnesota, faces the same choice in 2012 as two years ago: Collin Peterson, a Democrat from Detroit Lakes, or Lee Byberg, a Republican from Willmar. Continue Reading

Hey, guess what Carl, I am NOT a Colin Peterson fan … nope nope nope nope nope. I will not vote for Byberg either so I will just simply not vote on this line! He has ticked me off several times with his votes and I never get a response back from him … heck I wasn’t even sure he was up for election this year … I have heard NOTHING from either of these candidates in this area … apparently NONE of them want ANY of our votes … we must be a meaningless area of their district … just my humble opinion of course! (Now both Dems and Reps are going to dislike me lol)

I will not vote for Byberg because I have not heard anything from him … I do mean ANYTHING! I have not received a single piece of information from either campaign … I receive from Koenen and Gimse almost daily (that is a waste of $$ in my opinion, but it’s their $$ not mine). I’m sure before I go and vote I will check out both thoroughly but as of today … I vote for neither … that is still my right!

I’m not a Byberg fan either, but I will give him a little slack on having a pretty silent campaign considering they’ve operated on basically no money. To run a Congressional campaign in the 7th District of Minnesota requires a serious campaign structure.

well this must be the most silent campaign in campaigning history! one would presume that Peterson, the incumbent, must have $$ … why isn’t he spending it?? I don’t have a clue on him either! as I said, chances are I will skip that line! or, perhaps there is a 3rd party … oops I have no idea, I guess we have no representation here … and yes, that is a SLAM at Peterson!

I’m with Jessie on this one. If I can’t find out enough about a candidate to make me want to vote for them; I leave it blank. It’s probably an independent voter mindset. I don’t vote for someone because the have a paricular party diesignation behind their name. I vote for the person who best fits my philosophy on government issues. Why would I vote for a sitting judge who never has an opponent, unless I was aware of a desirable write-in?

Also not a huge Peterson fan either but I already cast my absentee ballot for him. I do like the fact unlike others that he does have some tenure and our rural district needs that. Even though I lean left of center I do have an open mind and Lee Byberg did nothing to convince me that he was a better choice. Lets be honest the reason he had no money from outside the district wasn’t because he would not take it, it was because there was none. Just like the Kurt Bills campaign there is not a race to gain a seat so no national or PAC money flows in to these races. Look how fast the money left the Aiken campaign in Missouri. Sorry Carl, but the 7th MN Congressional District and the MN Senate seat stay in the blue! It also looks like the 8th is going back to blue with Nolan.

I’m voting for Byberg. Collin Peterson doesn’t back labor. He has forgotten who got him elected in the first place and kept him in office over the years.

ok just to be informed, I went to Mr. Byberg’s web page … I found it ironic that a man who loves history is not a member of his local historical society or of the state historical society … I am … I also was chagrined to find very little substance … just more of the same old talking points (lower taxes, cut spending) (btw did you read the story on Fox News about 80 large corporations who say to RAISE taxes and CUT spending) … there is nothing that he has on his page that I connect too … sorry, the line stays blank .. I read, I didn’t connect, I chose to not vote for a U.S. Representative … and now I am informed (not on any 3rd party people however, but we all know they don’t stand a snowball chance in the warm lower climate)

Bob, I have to tell you that our health care premiums have raised at a lower rate in the last couple of years then the first 8 years when President Bush was in office … we went from a $250.00 deductible in I think 2001 or 2002 to a $5,000.00 deductible the following spring … then when we thought things couldn’t get worse, they did … you could only afford that deductible if we gave up copays on Dr. visits … then they upped the prescription drug benefit … then we had to pay a total of $15,000.00 out of pocket before insurance would kick in (I am NOT making this up, I did it one year and it almost devastated us!) … now on the plus side since 2009 our out of pocket is $10,000.00 per year, we still have no copays on Dr. visits, but we do get one physical a year and a free colonoscopy and mamogram each year … and to be honest with you … I don’t do either .. I know, shame on me, but I can’t afford to go to the Dr. and be told I am sick! I will not pay another $10,000.00 out of our own pocket AGAIN! And people, I am NOT making these figures up! Premiums have finally stabilized and I appreciate it greatly … oh and here’s a kicker … I have had my insurance company refuse to fill a Doctors prescription TWICE because they know better! (this is not a physical visit btw)

Colin Peterson will continue to be re-elected for as long as he wants to be and it doesn’t matter who runs against him. All you have to do to figure out why, is to go to ewg.org and click on MN and then search the 7th Congressional District. While your there, read the info on Crop Insurance Subsidies (because that info isn’t broken down as well yet) and you get some idea why the vast majority of even the Republican farmers, business owners, bankers, etc will continue to vote for Peterson and his influence on the Ag Committee. Not alot of people in this part of the state interested in stopping the flow of cash from the farm bill that comes into the 7th District. People will talk smaller government but they don’t always walk the walk if it’s going to affect their own pocketbook.

I find it interesting that any comment that disagrees with the editorial has been rated to low and the comment has been hidden. I thought this board was meant to encourage open discussion but you can’t really have that when anyone who disagrees with you gets their comments hidden. The purpose of hidden comment tool is to hide comments that are offensive or inappropriate. It looks like all of ATPlowmans posts were hidden but after reading through them all, none of them seemed inappropriate. In fact, one of them even starts out saying how he appreciates the respectful and honest comments. How is that inappropriate? How can we have an honest discussion if one side is not allowed to voice there opinions?
Hot debate. What do you think?

I think this forum is set that if you have lots of ‘dislikes’ it truncates the posts …

Why? I want to hear what you think, even if others disagree with it…
Seems like a form of censorship to me. I care about your opinion, regardless if we end up agreeing or not.
Mr. Johnson has “dislikes” for making an observation. Why? Who and why would anyone object to that? Let’s just vote it down and make it go away. That’s not leaving room for discussion. Now watch, this post will get the same…all because I’m trying to have a legitimate discussion regarding local politics. Isn’t that part of discourse? We can’t do that anymore I guess, for it’s a popularity contest that results in being censored.

well ‘at’ I don’t know why they truncate posts you would need to take that up with the trib … regarding likes and dislikes … it’s politics as usual … it seems in this country you must be hard right or hard left … I am neither …. I say my peace, I realize half of the population will not agree with me, perhaps half will … honestly it makes no difference to me … I still click and read posts when I have the chance whether they are truncated or not … and as I have said before, unless I fee something is really off base, I neither like nor dislike a post … but it does seem, since I have started coming to this ‘forum’ that a number of people no longer post … I can see why, it’s a shame … we still do have freedom of speech, for a while anyway lol
