Angry words about sewage at EGF council
October 23, 2012 at 3:03 pm in Grand Forks Herald
In a City Council work session at City Hall, a discussion about the latest idea about handling wastewater quickly turned into a finger-pointing shouting match where both sides accused the other of lying. Continue Reading

Mr Straus must be nervous. Calling for an apology in the middle of a campaign? Starting a fight at a public meeting? I guess waiting till the work session was over & tying it on outside would have been too much to ask?

In all fairness, Mr. Stauss did not tell anyone on the council that he was going to miss the meeting last week when this was brought up. Mr. Pokrzywinski brought it up, not Mr. Gregoire. Luckily, we do have someone on the council who will call a spade a spade.
Mr. Stauss has been in office for 17 years. He is drunk on his own power. Why do the residents of EGF keep voting him in? Here’s why: No has called him out until now. I could go into why, but that would be a 10 page paper.
I ask you this: If Mr. Stauss “bleeds green” like so many people say is their reason for voting for him in the past, why does he have his business in Grand Forks? Maybe he doesn’t want eastsiders to know how he runs his business or they might get insight into how he runs the town. Or maybe because he continually lives in past touting his laurels as a “flood recover”. Even that isn’t totally true. He rode on the coat tails of Grand Forks leaders to get the national people here.

I am glad there is another worthy opponent running against the Mr. Stauss this time. I feel he would have lost in the past had he faced a stronger challenger. We will see on election day.
You make a good point about Mr. Stauss’ business being in Grand Forks. There are different shades of green. I guess he would rather create jobs and pay taxes on the other side of the river.

It’s frustrating to watch. If all real options have been explored on saving the ponds, cooperation with G.F. could make a lot of sense. It seems odd that EGF ponds are shot. With proper rip-rap, maintenance, etc. it seems they’d last 100 years. Replacing the hardware can be expensive, but it seems odd to bail on such an investment and “rent” from GF. It’s usually the ND cities falling behind on this stuff. It’s time for the EGF council to start empowering their engineers and utility people. With good staff, mayors & councilmen shouldn’t have to put in that much time. It just might be time for a change. And why confuse things by planning a green development for the ponds? Stick to the elephant in the room.

I think enough is enough. Mr. Stauss and Mr. Gregoire both are candidates of special interest and their juvenile behavior shows it. I don’t know a whole lot about Mr. Walsh, but a fresh start is just what we need.

Anonymous, your comment here shows that you probably haven’t attended a council meeting or work session, because if you had, you wouldn’t have seen juvenile behavior from Mr. Gregoire. All the juvenile “barking” was coming from one side. Mr. Walsh, while being a very nice man, does not yet have insight into the important issues that will be facing the mayor and city council in the next few years. Hopefully he will get involved at some level, since he is a very “even-keeled” individual. But that doesn’t mean he is ready to be mayor.
