‘Home of the Fighting Sioux’ signage removed from REA exterior today
October 22, 2012 at 10:08 am in Grand Forks Herald
Workers began removing “Home of the Fighting Sioux” from outside walls of Ralph Engelstad Arena today, as required by the 2007 agreement that settled a lawsuit between North Dakota and the NCAA. Continue Reading

Flyingnurse, what is the reason for your cheer (that is a serious question not a mocking question)? Some people are happy because the removal of the name symbolizes the end of this long controversy while others are feel that it represents an acknowledgement that the fight against racism is succeeding; I suppose others could feel a little of both. I was one of the first people to accept that this change was inevitable and was among the voices calling for a quick and decisive decision to make a change. While I accept the change, I am saddened by the loss to the University, the alumni, students and the native Americans who wanted to retain the name. I believe the racist aspect of using the nickname was greatly overblown, but any institutional racism is inappropriate so I accept the change. That does not mean there is reason for jubilation nor reason for cheer. Frankly, I believe that this fight had very little to do with racism and was all about a few “cause driven self-proclaimed intellectuals” who looking for a way to show their righteousness.

Better said by better men:
“Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard
Some do it with a bitter look
Some with a flattering word
The coward does it with a kiss
The brave man with a sword”

They will always be the North Dakota Sioux since there is no intent to find a substitute name for Sioux.

Aristotle would have gagged if he had witnessed the debate over this unfold. Just about every logical fallacy in the book was employed, from incendiary language and ad hominems, to argumentum ad misericordiam and appeal to authority. The mere fact that the policy was not applied universally such that Utah and Florida State wwere given the same judgement as UND and smaller schools, pretty much show it had nothing to do with anything but NCAA hubris.

No argument there Gene, but no one ever said otherwise. UND and the people of ND had a choice: keep the name and drop out of the NCAA or drop the name.
Since as you said this was about money (MN pays $800,000 to skip a team and people still argue about the amount of money involved in level 1 athletics) there never really was a choice.
ND had the chance to do the right thing if they really honestly believed in the name. They chose to do the expedient thing instead.
I am not saying they were wrong (I think they were right in the end), I just refuse to stand by idly while people wrap themselves in the flag of victimhood and blame all of their problems on an external source.
We made a choice. No one forced us. We could have left the NCAA with the stroke of a pen. We chose the money. It is as simple as that.
Hot debate. What do you think?

You know Gene….I’ve balked at these boards regarding the name as being nothing but the same rehashing of opinions again and again, but you put it in a way that seems fresh.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how much of this cost is being covered by UND and how much by REA? I remember REA saying that they weren’t going to remove all the sioux logo’s but I guess they changed their mind.

Where have you been? What you see in the picture is about all that is going to be removed. The NCAA reversed themselves & said everything could stay with the exception of a couple electronic logos outside. They realized they had overstepped their boundaries & are doing damage control.

Spearman: I have often disagreed with you but I never took you for being out of touch with reality (I reserve that for Always).
They did not reverse themselves. As things wear out they will be replaced with non Sioux logo items.
A reversal would be when the carpet wears out it will be replaced with another FS logo carpet.
No one ever expected the floors to be ripped up or the seats removed.
This is about money. Those moves would have cut into profit and that was not going to happen.

Could not agree more. Thought I had picked up the Fargo paper by mistake.
Also opinions closed on Russell Means but open on every fluff story at the bottom of the screen? Not to mention the food truck story out of Willeston, ND protectionism at its finest, but can anyone point that out??

Ever notice the number of real stories not open for comment? And how inconsistent comments are allowed for Op/Eds? While some flash in the pan’s marriage is open? Of course, when the Herald does want reaction, they run another ACS or Sioux story.

Everyone should have known this was coming. There are lots of logos in the building that can remain and remind us of the rich tradition of the Fighting Sioux years. Those days will always be remembered and are part of our history. We will move on from this and continue the high quality of UND sports.
I continue to support our fine University and continue to support all of our fine atheletes as they compete just as they did before. The name change dosen’t lessen my enthusiasm for our sports teams as we start a new season of great entertainment. Go UND!

Who said anything about white people?
The fat old malcontents I am talking about are the same group of losers that ruined the student section because students standing up.
As an undergrad it was first come first served in the student section. You skipped your Friday afternoon class & got a place in line between 1300 -1600 depending on who was playing. I used to pull my oldest out of school early so we were assured of a good seat (students could take one guest). He loved being on the glass. Then you stood & cheered the entire game. It was called team spirit.
Unfortunately, the season ticket holders around the student section complained. You guessed it: middle aged, overweight, & a minimum of two beers per period. They thought they were home watching the big screen.
Sorry Phil. Nothing but derision for these jokers.
Oh, they were also the ones who insisted Native Americans got free tuition & said repeatedly that if the name goes so does every Native American & Indian program at UND. The old “if we can’t keep the name there is no reason to keep the programs” mindset. As if the programs were rent on the name.
After dealing with these people for years it is easy to see why the name had to go.

FN said, “A reversal would be when the carpet wears out it will be replaced with another FS logo carpet”.
FN said,”No one ever expected the floors to be ripped up or the seats removed.”
What carpet? When the original NCAA directive happened it was about all logos, permanent or not. It did mean the floor logos and the emblems in the railings and ends of seat rows would be gone. The logos that were electronic on the outside of the bld. would be replaced when they wore out everything else would have to go now. The NCAA reversed themselves otherwise it wouldn’t have been a story.

Well…flyingnurse took a lot of history courses…”revisionist” history.
I think it is called…rationalization.
[Rationalization is something that every human being does, probably on a daily basis. Rationalization is defined as “Creating false but plausible excuses to justify unacceptable behavior.” ]
And he just loves the NCAA….so much so…that he makes excuses for their behavior…no matter how vile and ignorant it may be.

Do you stand in a movie theater?n At the Chester Fritz? How about a little curtisy to the people behind/ next to you that can’t see. If the NHL ever fires up again, I dare you to take your “stand up and support your team” approach for the whole game. By the way, wear a raincoat, you WILL be covered in beer, if your lucky. Standing up at points in the game are ok. The whole game is rude. I often find it funny that when the horn sounds, all the students sit down and act civil.
