Walmart offers a new gateway to growth for Grand Forks

City leaders hope that a Walmart Supercenter planned for Gateway Drive will spur more retail and residential development for the north side corridor dominated by more industrial businesses. The added housing could help alleviate the shortage and bring prices downward. Continue Reading

The City has been crying about Gateway Drive for decades. I keep hoping they’ll grow up and stop acting like a spoiled three-year-old; but I suppose that’s too much to ask.
Wal-Mart can’t staff the store they have. How will they ever find people to work at a second store? First Guess: Another disaster where they have twenty check-out lanes, and only two of them are open.
How many Communist Chinese Outlet Centers does Grand Forks need? I’d say we have enough already. I’d be way more interested in stores that sold quality merchandise instead of bottom-of-the-barrel Chinese junk.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Why is I-29 seen as a barrier to residential development as the art. says? Look @ Fargo’s & Sioux Fall’s residential dev. to their west 29 areas. They build bridges over 29. Retail follows so people on the west side of 29 don’t need to depend on getting back to the east side to shop.

I live not too far from where this will be built. Of course it wont have the draw of 32nd because while everything was moving around the mall and Wally World out there this end stopped being a corridor with business set up to entice air base personnel and others from the west on their way in and out of town like it once was. In fact since so much was developed around 32nd it appears that much of the regular local trafic from the west now cuts over to 32nd by turning south on the airport road over to that end of town and avoiding Gateway altogether. The north enders, base, and others from west of Forks will probably make this pretty sucessful. It might take a while for most Canadians to even realize there’s a Walmart that far away from I29. I travel all over the country and I just nmever see Walmart signs along the highway too often. When you’re that big and a house hold word you just become a easy spread in any community….Everyone knows Wally World….
