Thanks to Mr. Krippen, who knew my grandfather and namesake, for sharing this story about his decades of community service nearly thirty year’s after his death. This piece brought back many memories of the accounts he would share with our family. Though he witnessed many “ghoulish and ghastly” things during his medical career, “Doc” was always completely devoted to his patients, his community and the practice of medicine; nothing scary about that.
At just 4′ 10″, the younger Dr. Kilbride was “short” in stature. Still, everyone who really knew him recognized him as a moral giant. The elder Dr. Kilbride, John Stephen, however, stood at six feet.
My grandfather was absolutely devoted to the idea that every person, especially those in his community, deserved stellar medical care, regardless of anyone’s ability to pay. In trying to accomplish that in his own community, he was a visionary and made extraordinary sacrifices on a daily basis toward that end.
His personal and professional convictions and accomplishments reach way beyond the first half of the 20th century and are even more relevant today.
Thank you for honoring his memory.
Elizabeth Kilbride Murray
