Split Cottage Grove City Council says it opposes voter ID amendment
October 18, 2012 at 4:25 am in South Washington County Bulletin
Calling it an unfunded mandate, he Cottage Grove City Council tackled a divisive state issue Wednesday, voting 4-1 to pass a resolution opposing a proposed state constitutional amendment that would require voters to show photo identification at the polls. Continue Reading

can’t say I like this quote at all: Lehrke said the council’s resolution amounted to “weighing in at the ninth hour” when it could do nothing to influence the content of the amendment. He also said the costs of implementing a polling place voter ID requirement could fall to the county or state.
“Somebody will pay it,” Lehrke said. “We don’t know what those costs are.”
no matter what it comes out of voters pockets, it does not matter if it is at city, county, state or federal level, the money is still coming out of my pocket.
I don’t see the problem will showing an id when I go to vote, but I really don’t like the fact the city is stepping in and taking it off a ballot.

That’s funny…the city can’t take a statewide amendment issue off the ballto. They are just voting their disapproval of the measure and stating why.

What’s the number of documented voter fraud cases in Minnesota? If it’s insignificant, the leave it the way it is.

Depends Buzz…I’ve seen some numbers where they said there have been only 10 cases of voter fraud since the Nixon administration and others who say it is rampant in the system. Unfortunately, neither side in the argument has come away with any reliable numbers. Unfortunately, I think this was passed by a legislature who was worried about its majority and made a rash move without educating the public. I have no problem showing ID and have no problem with some ID system being put in place. But the proposed amendment doesn’t even allow a military ID to be used as a voter ID – it only allows three types of ID to be used (sorry, I don’t remember what they are).
One more thing, and I’m tired of the posturing, but, isn’t it concerning when the person who ran for council based on a sole issue – the cost of a new city hall/public safety building, suddenly isn’t concerned where the money will come from to pay for new voting measures? What heck? If this is going to cost taxpayers anywhere between $10-50 million (using the conservative numbers), then shouldn’t there be some thought into how this is going to be funded? This is just stupid government. If you are going to implement this, show us how it will be paid for, without suddenly throwing it out to the counties and municipalities and saying “here you go, you pay for it.”

I remember years ago we had to show an ID to vote – No one had a problem then.
