If you’re like me, you’ve seen your property taxes skyrocket. We have the Republican majorities in the Minnesota House and Senate to thank for these increases. Continue Reading

So Mr. Rehnelt, I guess that means you’ll be voting for Romney/Ryan considering the terrible state of our economy huh?

Just wait til obamacare kicks in and you start paying for that. I suppose that is OK since that was totally a democrat thing. Also, I thought the property tax increase was from when the democrats controlled the state.

Why are property taxes going up? One reason or $50 million a year: Illegal alien students a year. If you are here illegally, you aren’t suppose to be able to own property, so no property tax, but send your kids anyway and stick tax payers with the bill.

Why not remove the tax exempt status of churches and religious institutions? In MN alone, they sit on billions of dollars of land, with billions of dollars of property value, and don’t pay a penny of property taxes. If you believe in the true separation of church and state, it’s only logical they pay up. The result? Millions of dollars would pour into the state coffers to support all manner of programs.
Do you think you can fine ONE legislator who will touch this ‘third rail’? Or do we continue to put the tax burden on the middle class and poor who can least afford it?

NOBODY who RENTS a home , apartment or condo pays the property taxes. The landlord/property owner pays the taxes. There’s NO loss in property tax revenue just because somebody’s renting. Immigration status has nothing to do with it.

Property taxes are an expense of the landlord who pays the tax to the governing body assessing the tax. The landlord establishes the amount of rent to recover the expense of the property taxes. So from your view you say the landlord pays the taxes — but—
The landlord issues a CRP(Certificate of Rent Paid) to the renter for which the tenant can file the refund form M1PR to get a portion of the taxes(which the landlord included in the rent) refunded to them. From my view, the renter has paid the taxes to the landlord who passed them onto the governing body, but the renter can declare the money as having paid taxes which the states recognizes by law and will issue a refund directly to the renter according to renter property tax refund schedules. So the renter paid the taxes and gets the refund.
Confused but that is the way the state governs.:<)

Has anyone ever sat down and compared the two methods of the homestead tax credit versus homestead market value credit?
IMHO, the new method of the HMVC caused a lot of concern with cities and towns trying to determine their taxable property base whn they wre establishing thier yearly budgets. It was almost forcing cities and towns to lower their budgets but cities and towns did not adhere to the suggestion so budgets increased according to the past which we could blame someone for raising property taxes in the double digit area. It makes it easy to blame the legislature rather than go to the local governing bodies to see what was in the budget or to see what could be taken out of the budget. It is like letting the General Fund go up 25% and lowering the water fund by 40% but saying the total budget increase was only 2.7%

Since someone one brought up immigration I’d like to say this, if I were a legal voting immigrant I’d vote republican. Here is why, big business (generally republican) is the entity that made\makes it possible for most of the immigrants to come here. They are less likely to do anything that would affect their work force. On the other hand the democrats (unions and lower wage workers) are the very people that either lose their jobs or have their wages oppressed by immigration. So, as obama, they may say they want to help in order to get votes, in reality it is not what they want at all. Remember that obama had two full years when he could have gotten anything done he wanted, but immigration was never even considered! Sooooo…..
