Freshman goalie Matt McNeely made his first collegiate start and freshman center Cal Decowski scored his first collegiate goal as No. 13-ranked Minnesota Duluth defeated No. 9 Notre Dame 3-1 on Thursday night in a nonconference college men’s hockey game before 4,493 fans at the year-old Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Ind.

As usual, the rankings which are strongly influenced by the Eastern press, coaches and sportswriters, rank several teams higher than they should be. No way Notre Dame should be ranked higher than UMD — but, then again, those who influence the national rankings often think nobody west of Chicago knows how to play hockey…
