Back to the topic….were universities designed to be research facilities? Shouldn’t this be done in the private sector? That is my belief.
U of M’s Tim Mulcahy said..”The private sector is moving further and further away from the early-stage, risky, discovery type of research that universities are uniquely postured to do.”
Mulcahy said that the university will use state dollars for this research to nab federal dollars and partner with outside companies.

For the most part, public universities are now businesses and sports entertaiment centers; education has simply become a pretext for their existence. Administrators consider themselves executives and athletics operate as independent entities. Lamentably, the former know nothing about business. But no worry, just raise tuition and go to the state for more money when you overspend. The U of M built a new football stadium for a terrible teams, pays is basketball coach $2 million, its president $660k + perqs, and then cries poverty.
