I’d like to donate, but will only give to selected other charities until United Way stops supporting groups that discriminate on the basis of religion and sexual orientation.

United Way is a sham. They skim ~15% off the top, they pretend to direct donations according to the giver’s stated intent…they’re a middleman, profiting from charity primarily enforced and induced as a corporate advertising scheme.
Corporations strong-arm their employees into giving-until-it-hurts, then post the dollar amounts as if the Corporation was the donor.
Don’t get me started on the sort of Corporate “donations” which may be “charitable” in terms of IRS regulations, but which in fact the United Way never sees one dime of. It’s the “donated” cost of “man-hours and donuts” that the company spends to pressure it’s employees into “contributing”. It’s the cost of payroll for FORCED-ATTENDANCE meetings where the employees are shown propaganda films and given guilt-trips and so-called “peer pressure” to leave their common sense behind and sign the United Way “donation” papers.
United Way and the corrupt employers that use the United Way’s high-pressure tactics should be prosecuted under the RICO statutes for extortion.
The “top dog” of the United Way gets millions of dollars in pay every year. They sure as hell don’t need any contribution I could afford to give.
Send your money directly to the charity(s) you choose to support. That way they get 100% of what you intend to give, instead of 85%. The United Way can go pound sand.

I have followed this policy for years, giving to a couple of small charities whose heads I know personally and work on a shoestring.
