Is roundabout coming to Highway 29?

A new way of flowing traffic in and around Highway 29 just south of the Interstate 94 interchange is being proposed a “roundabout” intersection.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) met with city and county leaders this week to talk about placing the roundabout on Highway 29 South and County Roads 28 (the road to Lake Andrew) and 87 (that leads to Central Specialties and the shooting range). Continue Reading

Just say no!!! For an intersection in a major state highway, with high truck volume this is likely to be a disaster. One of the major defects is the radius. Look at the picture above and imagine a couple (or three) of semi trucks meeting. Remember this is at the entrance to Central Specialties as well. I have felt like many of the European roundabouts work well – but most that I have seen designed by MNDOT are not as easy to navigate. The story mentions this as a solution to reduce accidents – do we have a severe accident problem at this intersection? Or is this just engineers trying out something??

While the fact is that roundabouts do reduce the frequency and seriousness of intersection accidents, do those intersections have accident rates that justify such an expensive, major road construction?

That’s what we need, something to confuse the already terrible drivers we have in this area.
