Dead wood on Glenwood: Lakeside residents unhappy about dying saplings after road reconstruction
October 11, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
This spring, Joe Walker watered and fertilized the leafless new trees that had been planted in front of his Glenwood Street home. But his efforts to nurture some sign of life out of the saplings were to no avail.

I think the headline should be “Citizen mad because people can’t control nature.” So the trees died, the city went back to the contractor, and the contractor is replacing trees as described by the warranty? Non-story.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I really get a kick out of the picture of Joe Walker standing with his arms crossed trying to be a tough guy. The trees died and the contractor is replacing them free of charge, move on with your life dude!

I just wasted 3 minutes of my life reading this story hoping for something that was actually news-worthy.
You know you have it good in life when your biggest complaint is that the tree the city planted last year died of unknown causes and now you have to wait for the replacement to arrive.

Woodward and Bernstein eat your hearts out…your Watergate Papers are NOTHING compared to the hard-hitting investigative journalism routinely found at the DNT.

While I agree with you guys, what bothers me is the fact that the trees were absolutely incorrectly planted. I actually brought it up to my wife a while back, the contractor piled mulch 6 to 8 inches up the trunk/base, that’s tree planting 101, pile up the mulch and you’re going to kill the tree. I’d imagine this will be lesson learned?
