You have to feel for voters in Minnesota House District 7B, which includes Park Point, the center of Duluth and all of western Duluth.

Really DNT? He skips your forum, has not shown up to any other forums and presents zero ideas. As far as having experience, he voted against spending extra money to tell tourists that Duluth is still open for business after the flood and then spoke poorly of it after it was a huge success.
Does anyone really think he will be able to get anything done down at the Capital or will he just cause more gridlock?

I will vote for any candidate who has morals and doesn’t abandon a child.

Yes, John. Really. This endorsement makes the most sense out of any endorsement I’ve ever seen.

I remember Fosle sitting in the City council meeting laughing with his buddies and drinking coke while concerned citizens made their presentations regarding the student housing problems around UMD.
He is a ‘monkey see monkey do’ kind of guy, He has the trendy facial hair to prove he is a follower! I’ve never heard him say anything I agreed with, but we all have our opinions, it’s a free country for now!

Thank you DNT, there is a glimmer of hope coming from your pages.

Easy endorsement for the DNT- the other choices are a degenerate, spiteful, poisonous candidate who lacks character & integrity and a neophyte sacrificial lamb.

I’ve got my own hunches as to what’s going on, but I’ll keep my mouth shut. Jay’s an outstanding common sense guy and it’s proven by his votes on the city council. He is accessible, even if you live on the other side of the bridge and stands up and speaks when leadership is needed. He took my call several years back and I commended him for being the only one to stand up in a 2 state transportation board meeting and question the validity of rushing into a decision without hearing all the details because a key MNDOT official was not there to make his presentation on high speed rail. While others made comments suggesting they’ve talked about it enough and lets vote on it already, Jay stood firm and questioned the staggering affects that the project as proposed would have on the local taxpayer. Needless to say it passed overwhelmingly, but I was still proud knowing that my Superior dunce cap wearing councilors had to sit through his rant.

I realize some people are unhappy with the endorsement of Fosle. The DNT doesn’t just rubber stamp all the DFL candidates like they used to. And some people in our community just can’t handle that reality. We have a little balance to our reporting that we haven’t had in the past. I still feel the DNT has some room for improvement but they are moving tward the center. I honestly think Fosle is the best choice…..but the voters will have the final say.

Why not invite Erik to screen?

If you were thinking about hiring someone, and their public record, their resume, and their character references all stunk terribly, would you waste your time with an interview? No, you wouldn’t. And neither should have the DNT Editorial board.

You mean Erik’s record of being a leader in bringing retiree health care under control? Saving the City of Duluth buckets of money by changing the prescription drug coverage? By auditing the books of City funded health care? By representing his members and coming up with solutions at the bargaining table that work for everyone? By being a public servant that risks his life for the citizens of Duluth?

Risking his life on the job? …..So do a lot of people….ironworkers, carpenters, equipment operators, painters, roofers, and many more. Thats part of the job he signed on for and it was his choice.

Eh-hmmm. Didn’t Erik have to be dragged kicking and screaming to the table? I don’t recall him being too eager to have the firefighters give an inch when it came time to fixing the retiree healthcare issue.

John said “Erik’s record of being a leader”. Fathers who abandon their daughter at 2 years old are not a leader in my eyes and do not deserve the opportunity to represent all of the good mothers that provide love and nurturing for their children.
Leader of the deadbeat dads at best!

DNT, why wasn’t Erik invited to screen? The readers should know the answer.

Mr. Simonson was invited to screen with the editorial board — and did via our candidate forum on Sept. 5 at the Duluth Playground Theater. We screen candidates in different ways. Some one-on-one and others via forums. Either way, we ask them our questions and if we feel we need to follow up, we do so.

You say all canidates should be screened evenly? kind of like all canidates should be treated evenly on weither they are listed on the ballot? I love the commet on Jays facial hair beign “trendy” Jay has had the same goatee and mustache for years. He has been outspoken on spending cuts has not asked for any union endorsments I have know him for years and believe he has people best intrests at heart I know there wer canidate forums that he didn’t go to beacause his kids had things going on- his family comes first

More transparency? Like how the courts bent the rules allowing Simonsons to put his name on the ballet? Fosle is out of luck and will be a write in . But this is perfectly fine. The newspaper did nothing wrong.

Claire Kirch, WHY? Why did Erik Simonson abandon his daughter at 2 years old as reported by the DNT? What does Erik Simonson’s family have nothing to do with Erik after abandoning his daughter? It is a matter of CHARACTER and obviously this is not a DFL prerequisite.

I personally don’t think media outlets should endorse any candidates. Kind of a conflict of interest if you ask me. On one hand, they vow to present the truth from both sides and on the other hand they endorse one specific candidate. It makes it too tempting to slant their coverage towards one side, i.e. Fox vs. MSNBC. And finally, who really cares what a couple of people on the DNT’s editorial board think? We should all be making up our own minds on which candidate we think is the best one for the job.

This is one of the most intelligent things I’ve ever read on here. Honest.
Hot debate. What do you think? 22 11
Mike……that has been what I have said for a very long time. The media’s job should be to just lay out the candidates platform and views….then , the voter will make up their own mind! LOL!! That might not apply in Duluth tho….too many people just rely on the paper to tell them who to vote for….the folks here do not take the time to educate themselves on the candidates views! Fortunately, we have seen a change in the reporting on election day….so the media does not report the up-to-date vote totals…..until the country has voted….because of time-zones! Compare New York to Los Angeles….8pm in New York…..5pm in Los Angeles! When they broadcast the returns in New York….before the polls close in Los Angeles….that influences voters on the West Coast….hence…..distorting vote totals!

Why didn’t the DNT list Fosle’s position on issues. Looks like they talked about Eric. What about Fosle’s positions on issues that do not come to the council but WILL come to him at the state level. Things like social issues. At last nights debate he was asked about the marriage and voter id referendum and he wouldn’t give his position on them. He said lets wait and see how the voters vote then go from there. Lead from behind is what that is. Don’t you want the voters to know where you stand on issues that you will be voting on Jay. Eric supported vote no to both issues. When asked about women’s issues all he said was that he is pro-life, sex-ed he said we need it, family planning he said I’m pro-life. I am glad I went to the debate to hear where these guys stand on some issues that the DNT didn’t mention in this article. What did the article say about Jay, nothing. Eric is pro-choice, for family planning and sex ed. I think that speaks a lot for both candidates You all may like Jay but why wouldn’t he get the republican endorsement if every action he takes is far right. Fosle is running for a state position. Tell us where you stand before you get my vote! If you like to be on the right side of the issues try out the republican endorsed candidate (Silvers) and leave the guy that doesn’t want to tell you his position on big issues in the city council.

This is simple – issues are secondary to character. We only want our relevent issues brought forward by a candidate we feel we can trust to represent us well. In this race, there is a DFL endorsed candidate we can’t stand up for regardless of what he says he stands for because his actions prove he’s not trustworthy and he’s not a man of character. This is like judging three pieces of art – one of them is a pile of doo doo on the ground, the other seems okay but doesn’t really care much, and there is another that seems passionate about helping people and has a track record of not being a bad guy. No brainer, and didn’t even need to get to the real issues, unfortunately.

“A good and effective legislator has to be fearless, quick on his feet, thick-skinned, and able to take initiative.” Which is why you’re attacking Fosle and not Simonson? If Simonson’s skin were any thinner, we’d see right through it. His behavior is that of a bully and a thug, running over those who disagree with him. So, by your own standards, we’re left with choosing between Fosle and Silvers. Which one do you think will be best to represent us in St Paul?

A lot has been written about Simonson and his lack of communication with his family. Let me argue a point that has been ignored. We wont talk about right or wrong or abandonment or any of that stuff. Take the family out of this and let’s say he had a dispute with his neighbors that had been going on for 20+ years. Maybe the dispute was over a barking dog or a property line. The point is when you have a difference of opinion with someone do you just shut down communication and draw a line in the sand and say I’m not dealing with you any more? You say… forget you buddy I’m done talking and have a great life? Or do you cool off and then maybe try to smooth things over and try to get to the bottom of things? You know…talk to that neighbor and try to resolve the issue. Same thing can be said of Simonson’s work as a union official. As a union rep you are in tough negotiations with management. This is part of the territory. The union says it wants 5 percent and management is only willing to go 3. You hold your ground long enough and then they call in an arbitrator to settle the dispute. This is the problem…..as a member of the legislature YOU are the arbitrator! We need people who can settle disputes and work with the other side. Legislators need to compromise on some things to get stuff done. You don’t just fold your arms in protest. Our legislature needs to have members that can work together for the common good. Life is not all black and white…..it’s the grey stuff in the middle that requires solutions. We don’t need more gridlock. I honestly don’t think Simonson has the right temperament for the job.

Watch almost any city council meeting and see for your self how Jay represents his district. Almost like a bully. He is a bit hot under the collar for my liking. Not sure if he would compromise or just fight all the time.

If only the obaminator has been “screened” before getting endorsed, eh?

If many of you had done your research you would know that his not seeing his daughter was
1. A “Mutual agreement” between he and his ex wife due to his inability to see her often enough possibly due to his career as a fireman and the rotating shifts they work.
2. He paid child support every month and also covered her health expenses even though the mother said it was only when she turned it into the county which seems doubtful with the healthcare the city has.
3. She claims to have tried to contact him at age 5 then again at 13 what about the 8 years between? If her mother thought it was so important then why did she not interveine and contact him herself on behalf of the daughter?
4. Now that shes a sophomore at UMD why doesn’t she simply stop at the firehall or his house and confront him face to face?
Sounds like a vindictive pair wanting make him look bad..

So his work as a firefighter prevented him from having a relationship with his daughter? Really? Do all the other firefighters out there have the same trouble? Firefighters do have odd shifts….but they also get quite a bit of down time. Will Simonson resign from the fire department if he is elected? How will he have the time to do both jobs?
