National view: Obama hands Romney an opening, but not a new race

I would be careful about declaring the presidential contest “a whole new race” after Wednesday’s debate. Polls show that most voters have made up their minds, and some, due to early voting, already have cast their ballots. One good night for Mitt Romney does not turn the world upside down.

Obama was actually quite smart: by “allowing” Romney to talk freely, he generated all sorts of information (i.e. lies) that will be ammunition for the coming month. Anyone trained at reading body language could tell that at times, it was all Obama could do to keep from smiling, as Romney grew more and more over-confident, and the untruths flowed. That debate was only considered won by Romney by those people who believe anger and force and domination are the true winning tactics. Too bad for Mr. Romney, he couldn’t erase the lies behind his comments.
