Dr. Siri Fiebiger, Fargo, column: Obamacare remains the prescription America needs

Though far from perfect, the Affordable Care Act begins to address the inequities of access that cost all of us dearly, including covering pre-existing conditions, young adults, and preventive care for women. Continue Reading

The Republicans don’t have a plan for overhauling our medical system. Their problem is that they desperately need to win the Senate if they want to repeal Obamacare. If they don’t, Obamacare will be implemented and will go on to be regarded as a huge step for improving health care in this country.

Since not even the Republicans think they will retake the Senate, & certainly not with the numbers needed to repeal Obamacare, it’s implementation is inevitable. Even Romney is talking about keeping those parts of the package the private insurance companies hate the most: kids on parents policies till much later & no disqualification based on pre-existing conditions.
Hopes of going back to 2008 are simply pipe dreams. Neither side wants it at this stage

Since there is no such thing as a “death panel” in Obamacare, I can only assume you mean the insurance industry execs who have been deciding who is covered and what is covered for far too long.

In case you have forgotten (and in case you watch Mitt blathering about it):
- The idea first came from a conservative “think tank” (the Heritage Foundation).
- Romney put it into operation in Massachusetts (where it remains popular).
- It makes the uninsured (freeloaders) pay their way (note that please conservatives!).
A single payer system (with a private option) would almost certainly be a lot better, but in the meantime the ACA is a major improvement.
