Duluth port client expanding in Brazil, cutting jobs in America

LM Wind Power said there was no connection between the two events, but was instead a reaction to strong growth in wind power development in South America while the industry was losing momentum in the United States.

Just another example of how the rest of the world gets it. We are falling behind at a steady clip due to politics leading the discussion ahead of science and economics. Wind is cheap, and cost of the fuel will not go up.

So, here we go…export jobs and technology to stay committed to archaic, polluting and unsustainable energy sources. Our political muscle tied to old technology is so pervasive we will continue to sell our children’s future to countries who “see” the future. We constantly talk about regaining the technology edge in the world but the words are hollow and the agents of greed in charge. We have a political quagmire and no will to do what’s right…hostages to the past and corruption.

I expected to open the readers’ comments and find the “I told you so, you tree huggers” diatribe that usually dominates these stories.
Ranger and Kenneth, you restored my faith.
America is in trouble – big trouble and it takes stepping outside it to see that there must be a fundamental shift in lifestyles, living standards, politics, lobbyists and moral fiber and ethical business practices to get it back on track. I am grievously concerned that it’s too late.

Oh, it’s too late! That ‘change’ part is coming like a ton of bricks. Let’s just hope and pray it’s quick and rather painless.

Actually, another example of a highly subsidized industry that cannot stand on its own. Yes, many people want it, but few want to pay for it. Thus it dies on the vine once its life cord from Washington is pulled.

Don, you mention the federal subsidy…. There is this pervading sentiment to demonise anything that receives a government subsidy – probably because the obvious ones have exposed so much pork barrel or corrupting influences in spheres of life unimagined. But and a big BUT, publicly funded subsidies aren’t inherently wrong. They just need to support things that we as a nation need or need to jump start for the greater good of America. Alternative energy is one of the big ones and I know there was that big scam in the Silicon Valley – very unfortunate. But people of America – wake up!!! Do you know how much of your tax money has subsidized the tobacco industry, the Enrons, the oil industry if not directly through tax subsidy, then through the dismantling of the gov’t watchdogs that were put in place to protect us – for example, the USDA is working to the benefit of the food industry – not the American consumer. It’s an absolute travesty!
