Psychologist Charles L. Brewer said that when it comes to a youngster’s development, “Heredity deals the cards and environment plays the hand.” It has been my experience that Brewer is correct because we teachers see the results of bad environment (aka bad parenting) quite often.

The kid had all summer to get a job- mowing lawns, exercising dogs, what ever to earn money for his hockey equipment. Seems to me he was used to parental handouts and when the door was slammed in his face he didn’t have it in him to say to him self- ” I really want to play hockey, how can I get the money for my outift.” He could have talked to the hockey coach who probably would have given him examples of how others kids have gotten around this problem. There are also equipment exchanges- in other words- USED equipment that has been outgrown but still useable. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles also may have helped-

Granted, he had all summer to get a job. Why bother, though? His ol’ man dumped on him, and busted his balloon. The dad could have said something along the lines of the expenses being out of line, but if you can raise most of the money, I’ll help out. It ain’t about entitlements, it is about encouraging an ambition and helping the youngster in fulfilling that ambition by among other things suggesting some ideas on how to raise the needed money. The conversation between parent and kid has to be a two-way thing, if we are going to encourage our young to grow and learn independence.
