So if I understand this correctly, their reasoning is that the government wasn’t there to help them. How did they survive before the government handouts? From what I’m reading it’s more about the need for common sense than government support. You don’t need the government to tell you that abusing or neglecting children is wrong.

SL has been in the news constantly over the last 2 years. There have been literally hundreds of stories about the reservation. Not one mentioned the children.
If the Feds had been neglecting their duty-they very well may have-you would think a tribal leader somewhere would have said something.
I find their silence damning.

Simply disgusting. The Council is trying to pass blame and save face. The health and safety of children should be on the top of their priorities list. They claim they didn’t have the funding or technical help needed to do it right. The only way funding should be an issue is if all the tribal government accounts are empty. You don’t sit there and whine there’s not enough money for it, you cut funding to non-essential programs and raise hell until the public knows about it. You certainly don’t let children die and suffer while you claim to be doing your best. The contempt I feel for those responsible for this mess is palpable.
