Pro-gay marriage ads lack gays speaking for themselves

MINNEAPOLIS In one TV ad, a husband and wife talk fondly of a lesbian couple who moved into their neighborhood. In another, a married couple speaks of wanting fair treatment for their lesbian daughter. A third features a pastor talking supportively about gay unions. Continue Reading

That is what your church says. Our constitution says otherwise. Marriage is a civil right available to all citizens. If your church does not want to marry gays, fine, but don’t try to imprint your church’s values on my country. What’s next, marriage is between one Catholic and one Catholic or one Jew and one Jew?

Pono, if the Minnesota Constitution does not provide for gay marriage, why do you need an amendment to prevent such marriage. Further, under the constitution, civil rights are guaranteed to citizens, not dogs. Finally, the right to marry is no less fundamental than the right to vote. People can lose their right to vote if they commit a felony, however, you want the gays to lose there right to vote just because you and your church think they should. Thats wrong. If that’s the kind of country you wish to live in… I suggest you move to Iran.

One more thing. You were not born an anti-constitution religious homophobe…it was a choice.

So Pono the State Constitution does not state anything currently regarding marriage? And so the only item in the Constitution on the matter would be to limit the right to marry if this were to pass? The Constitution which is to be a document to provide and defend freedoms would thus be used in this case to restrict a freedom. You are alright with that?
What would be next, The number of children a family can have? Just think about how often we hear people complaining about families with too many mouths to feed and that the “government is paying them to have kids”. Is that going to be the next ammendment to take away a freedom from people?

Carl and Pono I really do respect how you feel about gay marriage, I may not agree, but I do respect your beliefs and convictions. My concern remains a constitutional amendment that takes rights away … any right … when our constitution can single out one part of society it is just wrong … as I said before, if them ‘democrats’ wanted to take a specific right away from you in our constitution I would be just as opposed! let’s continue to let laws do what they are intended to do and keep our constitution(s) affording rights to our citizens … it’s a very simple concept … gay marriage is illegal in MN based on law … it’s already there! why do we need a constitutional amendment … to appease certain people … to further inflame people … to cause more prejudice and hatred … I don’t know … why do we need it??

Pd Carl, again you which to impose and mandate your religious views on others. This is mentioned in the constitution as separation of church and state. With out using your religious beliefs then, what arguement do you have to make your case.

Marriage is an activity licensed and regulated by the state. That is why it is o.k. for your church to refuse to marry a couple based on their sexual orientation, but it is not o.k. for the govement to do so.

I was waiting for someone to bring up animals … *deep groan* … I am not excited about rights being taken away from anyone … I will be curious though when rights are taken away from ‘those who feel this amendment needs an exclamation point’ what will your reaction be?? please do not complain in the future … after all you believe that constitutions take rights away … and oh my goodness we are still on the gay lifestyle as a choice .. REALLY … yes I want people to hate me … to want to kill me … do you really think people want this … oyyyyyyyyyyyyy

It is a good question though; where are the gays in the ads? I would think showing a gay couple committed to each other, living as a family would be helpful to all concerned. With so many marriages ending in divorce, if a gay couple can show commitment to each other, it speaks volumes. I do, however, believe that marriage is a Sacrament blessed by God. I struggle with that…calling a gay union a marriage. But, my beliefs tell me that God made us to love one another, to not judge, and to continue His work on this earth. I can’t imagine the struggle one must feel when first realizing an attraction to the same sex. But loving and being loved by someone in a committed relationship is such an awsome goal, who am I to deny that to anyone?

I’m glad you are trying to be open minded here, just remember that not every married couple now is Christian so using the religious argument is not appropriate. That said, there are lots of Christian gays. Jesus even took issue with the religious leaders and preferred to live amongst the rest of us.

My opinion, Nora. I’m not pushing it on anyone else. I have a plaque in my house that says, “You can preach a better sermon with your life than with your mouth”. (or your fingers, I guess, in this day and age) We all have differing opinions. Mine is of a Christian bent so it does come into play in my thought process, whether you deem it “appropriate” or not. I will be tolerant of your opinion. I’m hoping you can be tolerant of mine. I am open minded about the situation and understand the civil, law making determination of the vote and will abide by that decision.

I surmise that the reason you do not see gay people in the ads is because you don’t need to convince them of this topic.

But they need to convince the “no” voters. Why not run ads with gay couples and families showing support?

Lora I think to many of the supporters of the ammendment are frankly afraid of their Gay neighbors. Personally I think it is much more impacting to hear from those who are not Gay that supprt the defeat of this ammendment since those who support it are trying to tell us that we are going to loose something by allowing samesex couples.

I am neither liberal nor conservative, pro gay or anti gay. I merely want to pass on to my children the same constitution that was passed on to me, not one gutted by the religious special interest of the majority.

Lora I don’t think there is any convincing to be done, I really don’t. You have those who because of their Christian faith could never support a union of same sex people … they will never support this.

Here is my scoop on this … people over age 60/65 BOTH republican and democrat oppose same sex marriage … yes in some cases people of both parties can agree on something! those age 35 and younger don’t understand the big deal … again BOTH republicans and democrats … those in the middle 36 – 59 were raised that this isn’t ‘normal’ (same sex marriage), yet we are willing to listen and rethink what we have learned … it isn’t cut and dried for us ‘middle folks’ … if this amendment should pass, like it has in other states, it will be a moot point soon enough as same sex marriage becomes ‘normal’ … it may take 30 years, but nonetheless, same sex marriage will happen once a generation is gone. I am confident that in my lifetime I will see it happen … sometimes it is hard to push people in a certain direction, we need to remember that they have deep beliefs regarding this subject just as those who are for same sex marriage have their deep beliefs. and yes, from those I have spoken to over age 65, both republican and democrat, they are opposed because of religious reasons. gay rights have come a long way … heck 20 years ago most were still in the closet. look how long it took for women to get the right to vote in our country … patience grasshopper, patience!

I find it interesting that those in favor of gay marriage, think that only Christians are opposed to it. I know many who haven’t set foot in a church in years, that oppose gay marriage. Just as I see more and more blacks opposing the reelection of Barak Obama.

well for me, everyone who I have personally spoken to say they are against gay marriage because of the Bible and their Christian beliefs …. of course, with that said, just as many Christians that I have spoken to are for gay marriage … as for more and more blacks opposing President Obama, I wouldn’t know, I live in a small rural community so I don’t have a chance to talk to a large group to those constituents … I personally have no idea what their thoughts are … I just know what my conversations are … and wow they are only with Christians … I’m not sure I know anyone who isn’t a Christian … are who would even admit to not being a Christian in our small rural setting

ok that last line didn’t make sense lol .. it was suppose to say I’m not sure I know anyone in my community who isn’t a Christian … I don’t think they would admit to not being a Christian in our small rural setting
and on that vein of thought, our local newspaper once did an interview regarding faith and spoke to an atheist in our town .. they remained anonymous because they knew the backlash that would have happened if people knew who they were … kind of scary in this day and age!

Once upon a time I believed marriage was between man and a women no if or buts about it. During this time we honored a married couples rights. Decades later things have changed and so have peoples choices and attitudes, and some are love ones sons and daughters whose parents believed like I believed. Life teaches us that change is something that takes place and is an ever revolving part of life. I do not intend to vote against gay marriage and deny someone the rights afforded to all of us married or single because someone thinks its against everything we were taught to believe. We once believed torture was inhuman and against our principles yet some of our agencies are allowing it! Gay marriage is not hurting anyone or is it disrupting our society because it is all about choice. Who I am I or anyone else to deny someone their happiness and their rights afforded to married couples. Religion needs to be taken out of this debate because it doesn’t belong. Besides the actions of the Catholic Church in regards to covering up Priests who molested young boys show the hypocritcal side of the Church which continues to try to influence our laws and legislation. The Constitution is defined by this country for the purpose of making sure every American has the right to be who they want to be, and live their lives by their beliefs without oppression or religion telling them otherwise.
