I guess this writer believes that when a President is away from the White House they can’t be reached (no phones?) , can’t be briefed (traveling alone?) , can’t monitor situations (again, no phone, no TV), can’t make decisions and can’t return at a moment’s notice to Washington, if necessary (no Air Force I?)?
Let’s not forget that George W. Bush stayed at his ranch while New Orleans flooded and then took a cursory peek / flyover days later.
You also forgot the 20 minute delay while 9/11 happened so he could read a book with kids. No biggie…just an direct attack on US soil, but he just had to know how that goat story ended.
Not that I don’t discredit the author to send this to the Globe. That does take courage to place your name on something in the public media. However, (and this is asking the Globe staff also) Does 2 sentences count as a letter? It barely meets the requirements of a paragraph. Perhaps this should be considered a “note”. Add 1 more sentence and they might have a Haiku.
Two of the most pathetic immature responses I’ve read in a very long time. How many rounds of golf have been played, vacations taken (on taxpayers dime), TV appearances
that are nothing more than campaign ads, White House
Parties with Hollywood elite, by this president while we are at war? President Bush did more for this country while chopping wood at his ranch than this one has done in four years! How is that for a paragraph?
Gee, Pat e., that really stung! What part of my comment was NOT factual?
Did you read the Dana Milbank’s commentary in the Globe today? Did you see the Romneys on “Live with Kelly and Michael”? Read the commentary and you’ll see the lame questions and answers offered up on that show. And did you see Ann Romney on the Tonight Show last night? I’ll save you the trouble and attach the link to Milbank: http://www.dglobe.com/event/article/id/60010/
Your argument is totally lame. Romney has more than a few BIG guys funding his campaign, and you know it. Sheldon Adelson, Las Vegas casino owner, has now donated $70 million to Republicans this year, and has set a new record! Fundraisers for Romney often charge up to $50,000 per attendee. Where’s the difference? Answer: there is none. Everybody does it.
As for vacation time, I offer up this question and answer from factcheck.org. You will, of course, refuse to believe it since it doesn’t suit your purpose, but perhaps other readers will. Facts are messy things, unless they’re YOUR facts. http://www.factcheck.org/2010/01/president-obamas-vacation-days/
I trust factcheck more than I trust you.
And, pat e., you can be certain LOTS of GWB’s vacation time was taken while we were at wars, that he started! Get real, would you?
And, two more questions. If Bush was such a wonderful president, why do the Republicans consider him a pariah today? Did you see him at the Republican Convention? Was he invited? (NO.) They run away from his record — and that’s a fact. Nobody mentions him on the stump, at least not in a positive way.
What’s your response to that?
Funny I don’t recall president bush invading another country, nor violating un sanctions. If my facts are right, I believe the appropriate steps were taken and congress authorized American involvement in both Afghanistan and Iraq. If my facts are correct, this president did what he wants with American troops without going through Congress. How many promises have been broken? Clinton is 100 times the president barrack is. At least bush loved this country and would never apologize to the scum of the Middle East for

Poor taste but people make fun of Jews and Christians all the time. Does Obama defend us? No! Oh, that’s right he want to a loving church where the preacher state,” God damn America”. Wonder if his wife is still, ”
Finally proud to be an American?
“President Bush did more for this country while chopping wood at his ranch than this one has done in four years!”…that would be 100% wrong in terms of jobs. .06% private sector job growth in 2nd term, and -.21% private sector job growth in 1st term. Simple math for Bush would be a -.15% private sector grow in 8 years. Obama is at .10% private sector growth. Thus in 4 years, Obama has increase private sector growth MORE than Bush did in 8 years (while chopping wood at his ranch).
I know facts are are a tough thing so I’ll just use Obama’s own words.
1) If I can’t turn this thing around in 3 1/2 years then this wil be a one term proposition.
2) If we pass the stimulus, unemployment won’t go over 8%
3) George Bush was “unAmerican” for adding 4T to the debt in 8 yrs and Obama has added 6T in just 3 1/2 yrs. Who is going to pay for the 16T we have in debt?
4) I will close Gitmo. (Gitmo is still open)
5)Taxes won’t go up if we pass the “Affordable Care Act”
6) You will still be able to keep your own doctor
7) The video is why our embassy was attacted
Oh yea, Gas was $1.89 when he took office and now is close to $4.00. Is Obama greasing his big oil buddies too? Do you remember all of the investigations we had when Bush was in office? And let’s not forget about food prices, both of these are just killers for the poor in this country.
I could go on and on. I just wish someone would give me one good reason to vote FOR this worthless excuse for a president. He obviously can’t run on his record otherwise he would be doing it instead of trying to run down his competition. This country got duped once, hopefully we have woken up and we will decide socialism isn’t what made this country great.
Got it! Obama won’t be getting your vote. We’ve heard and seen all your comments before. It’s likely not going to change anyone’s opinions, nor the outcome, if you’re brutally honest.
The TOPIC, however, is about “fiddling while Rome burned”. That statement has been refuted, and you should know it’s baloney. Any thoughts on the writer’s 2 sentence diatribe?
What ARE you saying, pat e.? That the President should NEVER leave the White House grounds, on the outside chance that something’s going to happen and he won’t be “at home”?
Are you saying that, if he travels, he doesn’t have access to telephones, Internet, staff advisers, TV, or an airplane — in fact, to everything he needs — to stay on top of everything?
Is that what you want us to believe? Do you not see how ridiculous that sounds? Not to mention impractical? And that’s why you agree with the writer’s statement?
Your comment is, on its face “pathetic, immature” and I’ll toss in “naive”.
Interesting to blame a President for gas prices when its a global commodity. Free market (something the GOP strongly believe in) dictates the price and not 1 man. If that were the case, the Bush was to blame for the prices in 08. Which i don’t blame him for at all. Same would go for food pricing. Free market. Most of the food pricing is acutally going up due to the poor corn harvet due to the drought we had most of the summer.
On the contrary, it is not difficult being a liberal “in times like these”. It’s much more difficult being a Republican, who are by and large feeling a bit gloomy.
No response to the challenge I made to your “facts”, pat e.? Feeling a little sheepish for having got it so wrong? Stop making outrageous claims that cannot be backed up. What possible purpose does that serve? Character assassination, based on lies, really pleases you?
I am feeling neither sheepish nor gloomy…on the contrary, I’m feeling pretty darn confident that the American people will vote this fake out of office and the economy will begin to turn around. Eastender, do you HONESTLY think this country is better off than it was 4 years ago.
Did you get your talking points from Jay Carney or from Robert Gibbs? It sounds exactally like what they were saying all weekend about why he isn’t engaged at the UN. I believe It’s because he knows he’s way over his head. All he knows how to do is to give a speech. Why did you take the time to go off topic and refute PatE’s comments but you won’t go any where near mine? What does Mitt Romney or his wife have to do with our embassy being attacked by AlQuada and our Ambassador being raped and beaten and 2 of our Marines being killed while Obama was chumming around with the movie stars? I’m sure he was briefed on it by phone because he sure wasn’t going to intel briefings until he got caught. I don’t care if he was in the middle of a fundraiser and he could keep in touch, he should of had his A#$ back in the WH with all of his top brass trying to figure out what to do. Just more proof that he is very detatched. If you are truly honest with yourself you could criticize Obama just like you did Bush with Katrina. Obama wasn’t going to go to New Orleans last month after that hurricaine until Romney announced that he was going.
Don’t get me wrong, both parties have screwed all of us over while we have been fat and happy the last 50 yrs. but I think we need to wake up NOW or we will be facing what Greece is facing right now. Read the Constitution and see what the role of the Federal Govt. is supposed to be.
Wow. Just wow. Your knowledge of history and current events is astonishing. “Ambassador raped and beaten?” None of the other 3 (not 2) Americans killed in Libya was a marine, either.
How do you know about President Obama’s intentions for travel to New Orleans? Where do you get your “facts”? I can only guess…
As for government screwing us over for the past 50 years, during 28 of those we had Republican presidents.
I just think that if we have a serious crisis ANY president should be in Washington and this is a serious crisis. I know they can be in touch anywhere but it’s the perception that counts and when he’s on Letterman or joking around on the View it doesn’t look like he’s taking it very seriously. Also, Bush never played 1 round of golf after 9/11 and 60% of the troops killed in Afghanistan has happened since Obama’s been president and I think he got to be around 100 rounds of golf but I guess that I’m getting off topic again.
cnsnews.com/news/article/60-us-military-deaths-afghanistan-have-o
“Also, Bush never played 1 round of golf after 9/11″..that would be nice if it were true. Last round played by Bush was Oct 13, 2003. Then quit the game. Clearly after 9/11/01.
Also, “60% of the troops killed in Afghanistan has happened since Obama’s been president” makes sense. Under Bush we really didn’t fight much in Afghanistan. It was all Iraq. Since Obama ended the Iraq war, we have shifted to Afghanistan. The place with the actual terrorist that attacked the US. Home of al-qaeda. Makes sense to fight those that attacked us, right? The outcome has been the virtual destruction of all its leaders.
US Military death toll in Iraq, 2003-2008: 4,222 (according to best information available on iCasualties.com.)
Us Military death toll in Iraq, 2009-2012: 264
Off the topic, I know, but readers deserve to know the whole story.
I haven’t found any Republican that feel gloomy. On the contrary, November 6th. can’t get here quick enough. I just ask myself. What has changed or gotten better the last 2 years? 2 years ago the Republicans swept pretty much all of the House races and almost won back the Senate because we finally said that the status quo isn’t working anymore. There were even some smart Dems that voted out their entrenched politicians. You guys just keep thinking that you have it in the bag…..
So, since the Republicans took control of the Congress 2 years ago, things have NOT gotten better, according to you? Their approval rating hovers in single digits. So, they’ve done nothing. How has that change been a step forward?
The libs control the senate…..hopefully not for long. Harry Reid has stopped any bill the Republicans put forth. You still haven’t answered my question, do you HONESTLY think we are better off than four years ago?
I’ll answer you once you answer the dozen or so questions I raised above. They’re far more important, because they get to the heart of the matter. You can start by explaining why you play fast and loose with facts and the truth. And my questions happen to be on topic.
Your silence to my question tells us all we need to know. You know our country is NOT better off and yet you continue to push/support the lib agenda. Think of our children and grand children’s future!
And your silence speaks volumes. You can’t handle the truth! Time after time, your claims have been rebutted by facts gleaned from the Internet or just plain common sense. You refuse to acknowledge that you might be wrong. And this isn’t the first time. You’ve made outrageous proclamations in the past for which you’ve been soundly rebuked. (Remember your outrageous slanderous comment about the Democrat party being the party of pedophiles? You’ll never live that down, as long as I live.) Why not just admit you made a misstatement, instead of “doubling down”? Your credibility is in question, regardless of the number of ‘thumbs up’ you get.
“As for vacation time, I offer up this question and answer from factcheck.org. You will, of course, refuse to believe it since it doesn’t suit your purpose, but perhaps other readers will. Facts are messy things, unless they’re YOUR facts”— What factcheck doesn’t tell you is that though Bush did go to Crawford quite a bit, the security upgrades, etc. were a one time expense to the taxpayer. It was known as the “Western White House”. Obama on the other hand tends to stay at the most lavish hotels for many days costing the taxpayers money every time he vacations. Laura took 1 vacation per year with her girlfriends to a camping lodge in Washington State. Michelle Obama on the other hand, has taken 42 days vacation, costing taxpayers approximately $10 Million. In one year! Spain, Four day trip to Vail, Colorado ski trip where she spent $2,000 per night for a suite at the Sebastian Hotel. It is estimated that the “hollywood elite couple” has cost the tax payers $1.4 Billion in 2012 alone. The public suffers under an extreme recession but we still end up paying for their lavish lifestyle. I think its disgusting how Michelle herself has taken gross advantage of the position she finds herself.
“Presidential Perks Gone Royal” Google it. You won’t find any REAL information on the Daily Kos or Huffington Post, Washungton Post sites so, I’m not surprised you haven’t heard this before. They only run cover for him, which is becoming more and more evident every day. Maybe Media Matters can launch another attack on someone off of the White Houses “enemy list,” to deflect attention away from what they don’t want the people to hear about!
Telling someone to “google it” isn’t giving the source of your information. You have specific numbers stated and should show where they were obtained. This is a cop out and appears that you are too afraid to state where you gained your “facts” and numbers.
“Most of the food pricing is acutally going up due to the poor corn harvet due to the drought we had most of the summer.”— Small part of it. Food prices were rising way before we knew this drought was coming. The biggest factor in the cost of food has to do with the flooding of the financial markets with money by the Fed trying to, “quantitatively ease” the problem. Central Banks all over the world have been recklessly printing money. When the amount of money in an economy goes up, you will see the purchasing power of the existing money go down.
“As for government screwing us over for the past 50 years, during 28 of those we had Republican presidents.”— And the Congress was controlled by Democrats 36 of those 50 years. No further explanation needed as to why we are constantly getting screwed by the government.
So you are saying its Congress’s fault and not the fault of the President, with your statement. I would say you are correct. This Congress has done nothing but prevent any bills that would help America, just to make the President look bad.
In part. What it actually tells us is the democrats have handled our monetary interests with great disregard. Uncontrolled spending. Failure to pass budgets (which is required by law,) etc. You base your response on what ONE Congress is doing. One Congress has not gotten us where we are today. It accumulates over long periods of time. It appears as though the democratic spending sprees are what is digging us deeper into the hole. Your link was nice but doesn’t show how many bills were blocked, or not even given a hearing by Darling Nancy and Dirty Harry!
My link shows the explosion of obstruction in the Senate. “One Congress has not gotten us where we are today. It accumulates over long periods of time.”….yet you can blame the President because the recovery wasn’t fast enough? WOW…i am amazed at the two-sideness in that logic.
“Did you read the Dana Milbank’s commentary in the Globe today?”— Dana Milbank? Are you serious? One of the most far left libs, working for WaPo, one of the farthest to the left newspapers in the country, and you think he is writing fact? Very poor person to gleen your “facts” from. He’s been caught telling tall tales quite a few times. He’s not a real credible source for the truth.
“.”….yet you can blame the President because the recovery wasn’t fast enough? WOW…i am amazed at the two-sideness in that logic.”— What exactly has he done to try to improve the economy? Gigantic spending bills. Obscene amounts of money just given away to failing companies, Solyndra, etc. Tell me, What has he done to improve the economy? Have you noticed the GDP has been lowered to 1.3%? WOW, I’m amazed at the blind trust you put in someone who has, and continues to act, so irresponsibly. What is better NOW than it was four years ago when it comes to jobs and the economy?
I suggest you look up at the false statement you made ““President Bush did more for this country while chopping wood at his ranch than this one has done in four years!”. I gave you evidence that Obama created more private sector jobs in his 4 years than the 8 years before him. Also look at the Dow before he took office and what it is now. Plenty of evidence that shows Obama has improved the economy in his 4 years.
““Also, Bush never played 1 round of golf after 9/11″..that would be nice if it were true. Last round played by Bush was Oct 13, 2003. Then quit the game. Clearly after 9/11/01.”—- And what exactly was the reason he quit playing?
It doesn’t matter why he quit. I pointed out that the quote ““Also, Bush never played 1 round of golf after 9/11″ was not true and easily could be proven as false. More spouting of “facts” when people clearly don’t research their statements. Was what RPG said the truth or not??
This speaks more to the intelligence level of the people who listen to — and call into — Howard Stern’s program.
I gather you’re a Stern fan, ellamay? Otherwise, how would you have dug this up?
The “average American” isn’t very bright, it appears. In a recent poll, 2/3 of the respondents could not name even ONE member of the Supreme Court. That level of stupidity should scare us all to death.
I love how we can go back and forth on your guys did this and our guys did that but to me it all come down to 1 simple question. Do we want to continue to live in a free country or not? Either we want to have the govt take care of us from cradle to grave and control our every move or we want a limited federal govt that believes in it’s citizens and states and gives them the freedom to make our own decisions, within the law. If you would take the time to read Obama’s books you would know what kind of country he wants us to have. He wants to divide us and put us all in catagories. I’m still trying to figure out how raising taxes on the rich is going to lower gas prices or lower food prices or put anymore money in my pocket. All that is going to do is give the politicians more money to spend and the truth of the matter is that we don’t have an income problem in this country, WE HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM. If Obama was so hyped on raising taxes why didn’t he do it his first 2 years when the dems controlled both houses (instead, he extended the Bush tax cuts) and if you haven’t noticed, that is the only “plan” that he has for turning this country around
And I’m sorry that I misspoke about the marines killed in Bengazi, they were actually a retired Navy Seal and a retired Air Force veteran. http://www.guardian.co.uk/…/13/americans-killed-benghazi-attack
But you never did answer the substance of what I said about Obama being detatched but as we now know, he just thinks that an ambassador and 3 other Americans being killed in a terrorist attack is just a “few bumps in the road”.
You WONT get a straight answer. The only real reason they support Obama so heavily is due to party affiliation. Amazing how blind some can be and will only vote for a party affiliation, even if it is destroying the economy by leaps and bounds.
I know, it’s sad that we can’t have areal debate in this country without calling someone a racist or worse. I just read that JZee said that he was voting for Obama because he is black. Imagine Toby Kieth saying that he was voting for Romney because he is white. When I first heard Obama speak at the Dem convention a few years back I thought he seemed like a decent guy but now I know they were just words and after I’ve learned what he really believes ( not what he says) I see that we were sold a big fraud .
RPG – you seem like a bright enough guy and it would be good to have a healthy debate. We probably could agree to disagree on a number of things, but at least your facts are mostly correct and you explain yourself well.
You take a bit of editorial license with some of your comments, though, which leads to misinterpretation. While Jay Z did say he was going to vote for Obama, he didn’t say it was “just because he was black.” Here’s a more complete excerpt from that interview. Doesn’t sound quite the same, does it?
“Despite his support for the President, Jay-Z’s “less government” viewpoint is more in line with Obama’s opponents on the right, such as Republican candidate Mitt Romney, who also calls for smaller government. But his stance on smaller government aside, Jay-Z is all in for the president’s re-election.
“I support Barack because I gotta respect that sort of vision. I gotta respect a man who is the first black President ever,” he said. “To have that sort of vision and dream, I have to support that.”
Where debate gets off track is when someone’s first post immediately attacks the comment as “Two of the most pathetic immature responses I’ve read in a very long time.” Pot, meet kettle.
People’s minds are made up and no amount of debate is going to change that. I’m not the brightest guy on the planet, but at least I can express my thoughts clearly. Choose to disagree with them; I don’t care.
People who make outlandish comments, not backed up by facts but rather by ignorance or partisanship, deserve to be called out.
The best debates happen when one stays on topic. One last comment (on topic): Should Romney become president, who among you will tell him he CANNOT leave the White House grounds? Ever. Just in case something awful happens. Who will tell him he can’t visit his homes in California, Utah or New Hampshire? Who will tell him he can’t visit his money in Switzerland or the Cayman Islands? The taxpayers will save $BILLIONS a year (per ellamay) on these junkets, extra security installations (guardshacks, presumably Western White House style) at his mansions, fewer Secret Service personnel. No one could ever accuse him of “fiddling”. You get the idea. Debate over.
Anytime anyone wants to debate FACTS, I’m all for it. Wild assertions and attacks – or baited questions that are off topic – will be called out, or ignored.
“The “average American” isn’t very bright, it appears. In a recent poll, 2/3 of the respondents could not name even ONE member of the Supreme Court. That level of stupidity should scare us all to death.”— For once, I have to agree with you 100%. And no, I’m not a Stern fan. I do like watching some yourube videos and it just happened to be one of the featured videos at the time I logged in. And, about your post above to RPG, I can agree with a few of those things also, but are you saying it’s only ONE side that may not be telling the whole truth, or twists sentences? “I support Barack because I gotta respect that sort of vision. I gotta respect a man who is the first black President ever,” he said. “To have that sort of vision and dream, I have to support that.” To believe more in Romneys small government ideas, but to vote for someone because he’s the “first black President” (which he actually isn’t,) because of a vision?? I would say he actually DID say he’s voting for Obama because he’s black!
Jay Z didn’t say: “To have that sort of vision and dream — and because he’s black — I have to support that”. But have it your way.
How many Mormons do you think will vote for Mitt Romney just because he’s, you know, Mormon?
How many people in Janesville will vote for Ryan just because he’s the hometown boy?
No difference.
“Jay Z didn’t say: “To have that sort of vision and dream — and because he’s black — I have to support that”. But have it your way.”— “Jay-Z told MTV News he was “not really into politics” because “a lot of people are serving their own agendas, so they just argue back and forth and they think about their next term.”
“And it’s more about themselves than about the people,” Jay-Z said. “They’re servicing the people, but we rarely get anything done because they’re going back and forth with whatever they’re doing, so I’m not really into politics.”
He could have been speaking about Obama, but the rapper said he had to support Obama because he “is the first black President ever.” —- Any other way to take it than he’s voting for him just because he’s black? Could you imagine the MSM’s uproar if a white person had made this type of racist statement, and said they were voting for Romney, just because he’s white?
Gee, ellamay, give it a rest! One person making one statement and you’re all wound up. Why is what Jay Z says or thinks so important, anyway?
My point (about Romney’s Mormon support or Ryan’s Janesville support) is that people often vote for a candidate “just because”. Perhaps Mormons want a Mormon in the White House for the first time; Perhaps Janesville people want to be able to say one of their locals “made it big”. Who knows? And you’re fooling yourself if you think that a certain segment of the white population will NOT vote for Obama because of his color.
You’re continuing to beat a dead horse. There’s no news here. Next topic.
In your very own words, “People who make outlandish comments, not backed up by facts but rather by ignorance or partisanship, deserve to be called out. “

Imagine Toby Kieth saying that he was voting for Romney because he is white.

“And it’s more about themselves than about the people,” Jay-Z said. “They’re servicing the people, but we rarely get anything done because they’re going back and forth with whatever they’re doing, so I’m not really into politics.”
He could have been speaking about Obama, but the rapper said he had to support Obama because he “is the first black President ever.” —- Any other way to take it than he’s voting for him just because he’s black?
Next topic.
