St. Louis County Board set to take a stand on marriage amendment
September 22, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
A majority of St. Louis County commissioners appear poised to pass a resolution opposing an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution that would ban same-sex marriage. Continue Reading

This guy is just plain wrong. Minnesota law does not have provision for legal homosexual marriage. A yes vote affirming a constitutional amendment just reinforces existing law. It does not put any clerk into a new position denying legitimate applicants marriage licenses. A no vote on the other hand leaves the door open for an activist judge to overrule the existing law, thus overriding the will of our legislature and popular vote. It would be good if the county board would consider how a clerk, who finds homosexuality to be repugnant, would be put into the position of issuing a marriage license to a homosexual couple if the law were overturned. Obviously it works both ways. The county commissioners are elected to represent all of their constituents for the betterment of the county . It is not their place to propagate a downward slide of culture into moral depravity.

Let’s get this right, the St. Louis County Board set to take a stand on gay marriage amendment despite no legitimate role in the marriage amendment legislation.
Seriously, how about putting the same or more energy in to lowering our county portion of our property taxes? This is nothing less than a huge waste of time.

No, nothing alike Fastone. State legislators have a direct legitimate role in state legislation. The county board does not.
Just because you disagree with the state legislation does not make it in your words “kinda like”.
The county board has no direct role. This is pure and simple grandstanding and a complete waste of time and resources that could be better used for county residents. Pro job creation policies and more efficient use of our tax monies would be better use of the money we pay these county commissioners.

A clerk working for St. Louis County follows the law, whatever that law might be. Personal beliefs have no bearing on the performance of stated duties, which is the case in most workplaces. Truth be told, that is the way most people prefer it, because if it was otherwise, you’d have a person across the counter who could pass judgment for any number of reasons and refuse you the thing you came for.

Let me rephrase — you COULD potentially have a person who’d pass judgment. My experience is that these folks do their jobs with a cheerful countenance and a good attitude. Sorry for misspeaking.

This board needs to spend their time dealing with issues that are county issues. This is nothing more than attaching the county’s name to personal opinions – and I could care less what Frank Jewell thinks about this issue. If they cannot spend their time on what they were elected to do, then they should not be on the board.

I agree with CK. City council or county commissioners do not deal with this issue so I could care less what they think. It is like when the city council oppossed the war in Iraq. Not their issue, do your job your elected to do. Anyway,If you vote no, some activist judge will step in and then churches that oppose it, will be forced to do something they think is morally wrong for less than 2% of the U.S. population.

I agree…..not the County Board’s concern……nor, is it the City Council’s concern…..passing a resolution like this….is just adding to the moral decay of our country…..this has got to stop…..now! This decay is slowly ruining our country! Another thing….they have said if some voter’s leave the question alone, and do NOT vote on the ammendment question……it will be counted as a “NO” vote…..it should NOT be counted at all for that particular ballot…..as a voter might NOT want to vote on this question at all! That the State would count that as a “NO” vote……is wrong! That is like stuffing the ballot box in favor of the people in opposition to the ammendment…..in other words…..the folks who say it is ok for same-sex to marry! This would be another nail in our country’s coffin!

That’s how amendment votes are counted. The idea is to require proof that a majority of voters to want to change MN’s Constitution. If someday an amendment is proposed to grant state benefits for civil unions it would have the same burden to overcome.

Katydid….sorry, I disagree! You say same sex is already against the law in Minnesota? Yes it is…BUT, you know the Libs…..they are going to keep pushing this….IF it is NOT made into an ammendment! Down the road, if most people feel different…..they can get the ammendment withdrawn from the State Constitution! If this is not done now…..they will keep pushing this same-sex thing….until it is adopted! For same-sex couples…..the marriage bennefits afforded to a man and a woman….you know…..same sex couples want the tax deductions, the insurance bennefits…..and everything else that goes with a marriage…..between a man and a woman. For same-sex people…..this is not natural……sorry, I just do not believe in same-sex couples! The Constitution DOES protect rights…..why should this be a given right ( to protect )? This lifestyle is a chosen style….not a style by birth!

I laugh every time I hear the name Frank Jewelll, the Draft Dodger that went to prison and would still be a felon had not the second worst president Jimmy Carter not given him amnesty. I am just get saddened people are so foolish to keep voting for him.

If we are “created” or “evolved” the final product is male or female. How can we not celebrate why we ARE.
How can aberrant behavior be a “civil” right.

This entire topic makes me sick! Of all the issues this is NOT in the top ten as far as I’m concerned.
Why gives this any attention? Lets stick to the REAL issues that impact everyone. Tell me how you will improve our econony or way of life please, and make a real difference!

Here is what the Commissions are do, I quote from the St. Louis Couny site “Commissioners work to provide services to
people and communties while overseeing the cost of such services.” Now ifind out they have passed 3 resolutions one on the voter ID and another on the Mining and now the Marriage Amendment. I attended the last meeting in Ely and we spent the whole morning on this before their vote. I have to assume they spend one morning with each on the other two resolutions also. Commissioner O’Neil did make a statement that they have no guidelines, if they can or can’t make resolutions and no guidelines about the resolutions themself. They need some guidelines. Also the City Councils who take stances on some of these issues is that really City business? Anyway, now I have to make sure that I
know what the Commissioners and my City Government personally feel about many issues before I can vote for them. I thought my main concern with the Commissioners is that they would be good stewards of our tax dollars and the services our county may need. I can only hope now that they will reconsider before Oct. 2nd when they make a final vote.
