It is clear from the mayor’s comments and the council meeting last week that there was much more to this issue than the school district let on prior to the referendum. In the future, it would be helpful if the school district would have its ducks in a row before leading voters down a primrose path to nowhere.

But of course, there is no place to comment on Tom Holland’s article on the front page. That stands alone with no ability to rebuff his remarks. Is he going to have his own column in the HSO now too?
He is simply wrong in stating the council should have said no to rezoning earlier. When exactly would that have been Mr. Holland? Why didn’t the school district approach the plan commission or council prior to going to referendum? Talks between school and city officials don’t constitute official approval of rezoning, that should be pretty obvious.

Just wondering if it could be this sort of one-sided reporting that got the referendum passed in the first place. The school district and HSO are awfully cozy with the superintendent having her own column each week. When you only give voters the part of the information you want them to hear, it is much easier to get them to vote yes.

I would also like the opportunity to comment on the Holland article. The HSO needs to open it up for comments. For one thing, the article states: “While it is too soon to be specific, Holland said the board and administration are considering other options. ‘And we are looking at doing some things that will shorten the time it will take. We think that is the right thing to do for the community.’” I’d like to know how the board could already be considering other options and looking at doing things when the board has not even had a scheduled meeting since the 9/17 city council meeting. Are the school board members talking outside of an open meeting? Holland’s comments make it clear that they are.

Thank you HSO. Too bad we needed to ask for it when all the other articles about this issue have had room for comments. Just an oversight I am sure.
