As a member of the YMCA from the very beginning, I was disappointed with the choice of words used when this capital campaign was introduced. The “Inner Family” of the Y was kicking off the campaign we were all told. This privileged, inner group had made all of the decisions, raised the initial monies, etc. etc. etc. “Inner Family” is a terrible choice of words. It implies there must be an outer family or extended family or shirt-tail or distant relatives etc. Where are the rest of us who are not in the “inner” family? Granted, most of us don’t have the kind of money to contribute as the “inner” family members do, but does that make us any less? Maybe we are not even part of the family at all. When I get the phone call or letter asking for money – I guess I will have to wait until they get around to the outer family or extended family, or those who aren’t even considered part of the family – I am not sure I even want to give anything at all.
