Cottage Grove residents to receive information on city’s upcoming parks referendum

The city next month will mail thousands of full-color brochures to residents along with their monthly water bills. The aim, city officials say, is to inform voters on what the two ballot questions and $13.5 million in proposed projects would mean for the city’s park system and their pocketbooks. Continue Reading

There are many people unemployed living in Cottage Grove during this tough economic time and the city chooses this year to propose spending 13.5 million on parks?!?! While I support parks and Cottage Grove has some beautiful parks, why can’t these improvements wait a few years until the economy improves? Vote No on these proposed tax increases!

Why does government always want more? It will soon come to the point where people will not be able to own a house free and clear because property taxes, school taxes, city & county taxes and whatever else they dream up will add up to more than the actual principle and interest payment on a mortgage. Parks are great to have-but they are underused by the majority of the population. They should be prioritized by use which determines the need for how many, how big and the included amenities.

I am glad they are putting it to a vote at least instead of just forging ahead like they did with the City Hall. Personally I would like to see a community center built in Cottage Grove, and even though it raises my taxes I will vote for this because I think as a community we need something for people to do here in Cottage Grove. I think if it is done correctly, it will become a destination. As for the other park of the vote to increase parks, I don’t know about that. I think maybe for the timebeing we have enough parks, but maybe I am short sighted on this.
