Romney’s video gaffe

Republican presidential candidate tries to stem damage from new controversy
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) His campaign at a crossroads, Mitt Romney struggled Tuesday to limit political fallout from his dismissive comments about nearly half of all Americans while Republican officials debated the impact of serial controversies on the party’s hopes of capturing the White House. Continue Reading

His statements are a flat out insult to half of America. He blatently painted those that don’t vote for him as irresponsible or “victims”. Does he even realize that part of the supposed “47% that don’t pay taxes” are the elderly, disabled, veterans, and college students? This canidate has lost all reality of who Americans are. He should not be a leader if “47%” of the country isn’t his concern. WE ALL SHOULD BE HIS CONCERN IF HE WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT.

You really think he was talking about the elderly, disabled, veterans, and college students?
Get real minister merc, we are becoming Greece one entitlement at a time.

Did he even mention that 2/3 of that 47% do pay payroll taxes? Nope. Family of 5 with 60k a year is part of that 47%. They are working, but i guess not hard enough for Mitt to care about them since they get their taxes refunded.
EVEN if he ment to target the poor on welfare and food stamps, so what!?! Are you really trying to justify him not caring about them? They are poor, so why should Mitt care about them. They don’t pay taxes, thus they shouldn’t matter to someone that wants to be President, right? It disgusting what he ment and what he said. EVERY American matters, regardless of income level, assistance, or if they paid taxes. For someone that claims to be a good Mormon and person, he needs to read Matthew 25:45 and reconsider his elitist attitude.
Hot debate. What do you think?

don’t think that’s what he meant at all, minister spin. He simply meant that those 47% were more than likely going to vote for obama anyway so he would have to try and win over the others in order to win.
Hot debate. What do you think?
29
24
No, what he ment was that the 47% that vote for Obama are lazy and irresponsible. He could have easily said “those that vote for Obama, won’t vote for me”, but didn’t. He added the entitlement part, the not paying taxes part, the personal irresponsible part as clearly the only reason one would vote for Obama.
And he is 100% wrong even in that. An elder lady that supports Obama because she doesn’t want Medicare to be a coupon program, isn’t irresponsible. A college student that votes for Obama so that government college loans aren’t cut, isn’t lazy. A working poor family that votes for Obama so that food stamps they use to feed their children aren’t cut, isn’t irresponsible. Mitt owes the entire nation an appology for his reckless dismissal of over half of the voting public with his narrow view of why they vote.

Romney: There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what.
In paraphrasing: he called 47% of the nation freeloaders.
I don’t think a lot of students, elderly, disabled, veterans and working poor and low income consider themselves freeloaders and not even moderate Republicans think that. In fact, many moderates are not voting for Romney.
Read David Brooks’ column, a conservative columnist for the NYT. He calls Romney Thurston Howell. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/09/18/opinion/brooks-thurston-howell-romney.xml

Gaffe? Romney tells the truth and the media calls it a gaffe. Where are the front page headlines when obama or biden make real “gaffes”? Obama from his own mouth says he wants to redistribute the wealth in the USA, where was the media for this “gaffe”? Biden doesn’t even know what state he is in half the time, what about that “gaffe”?
Gas is almost $4 a gallon, 23 million Americans out of work, $16 TRILLION dollars in debt, the Middle East is out of control, and yet obama’s most important job is to hang out with David Letterman, rappers pimp with a limp and jay z. What about that “gaffe”?
Let’s fix this counry for our kids and grandkids.

The wiser you get the more you should know that it is really all about the kids! I want mine to have the chance to earn a better life and keep it. I don’t want them working for a government handout or taking anyone else’s earned life style away from them.. That’s not the American way. That’s not hope and change; it’s a change to hopelessness!!!

“I don’t want them working for a government handout.” Everybody who pays into Social Security expects a “government handout” when they reach retirement age. What are Medicare and Social Security if they’re not government handouts? Trust me — if your kids are paying in, they’re going to want something back. That, sir, is the American way.

Excuse me for just a moment…how can SS and Medicare be considered hand-outs if we pay into both of them? A handout would be food stamps, fuel assistance, for examples..

My reasons for voting for him? It is the economy. My 401k has doubled in this Presidency, before the election i got a pay cut…this year i got a 15% raise because the economy is looking good for our company, even bought an American made car that would be otherwise bankrupt. This in spite of Congress making every attempt to “make this President a one term President”. Also, i don’t want medicare turned into a coupon program, i don’t want pell grants not to be cut for those that are poor and seek higher education, I don’t want Medicaid cut that impacts millions of children, I believe we all need to participate in health care insurance and don’t believe children with pre-existing conditions should be denied coverage when they and their families need it most. AND I PAY TAXES too!!
I also don’t think that sexual orientation should prevent one from ANY job, including serving their country in the armed forces. I believe that women (leadbetter act) should get equal pay for equal work. I believe that homosexual marriage rights should be recognized by the government and all benifits from those rights obtainable. I believe a woman has the right to her body and make decisions about it with her and doctor only.
Plenty of reasons right there for you and it doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with me being entitled to jack. I am blessed and i have no issue with helping EVERYONE in my country. I am responisble and am voting for Obama. He and I don’t turn our backs or make others “not my concern” because of difference of opinion, voting, or income like Mitt does.

Very well stated, Merc. The pinheads and cowards on here who ask loaded questions can’t handle it when you give them a straight, well-thought-out answer. They immediately go for the “thumbs down”. They have no rebuttal except to attack. There’s an old saying: “If you’re not ready for the answer, don’t ask the question.”
Perhaps you are too eloquent. Perhaps you confuse them because you write in complete sentences, spell things correctly, and use paragraphs and punctuation. Just take a look at the posts above and see for yourself that those who take the time to explain, spell check, or even reason get blasted by the rest. Bad grammar is a sign of laziness or stupidity. Pure and simple. That’s a sad commentary on the state of affairs. It’s actually pretty shameful. If you want people to respect your opinion, and take it seriously, proofread before hitting submit.

You are truly blessed if you received a 15% increase. BUT. Giving obama credit for that is insane! Not even the Dems are running on the economy.. That car you bought cost me a bundle in tax dollars and didn’t create any jobs in this country, but did in other countries. Most all economists agree that they would have been better off going bankrupt and so would of the taxpayer, the country, and me. I know you think I need to help buy your car, I don’t!
We do need to fix Medicare but not with a TAX but with a program that we can afford. That’s not obama Tax care!
The rest of your blabber is just that and as two faced, as obama is, you couldn’t know what he would do, if anything, when the time came anyway. When I catch up with you I want to take that car you and I bought For a Spin! I can’t really think of anything obama has done that has been a REAL benefit for THIS country.

The reasons I WON’T vote for obama; Fast & Furious. DUMB and destructive foreign policies. Constant lies from him and ALL his minions. VERY high unemployment rates (even though they are doctored with people NOT being counted so the true rate isn’t shown) Solyndra! Delphi non union employees having their retirement cancelled while union employees did not! Black Panther voter intimidation swept under the rug! The constant ritzy and expensive vacations for him and his family! The constant griping about the 1% while he does nothing but hang with them ( Jay Z, Beyonce’, Clooney, etc.). WON’T meet with the leader of an allied country because he has toi jet off to Vegas and then do a fund raiser and go on Letterman. This guy is a TOTAL failure!!!!!!! WHY the “H” would ANYONE vote him back into office is beyond me! And I don’t give a rats A?? WHAT you think of the spelling, sentence structure, etc. If that’s all you have, you are losing the battle. Who cares if their INDIVIDUAL 401k is doing great. I think about my family, friends, and neighbors who don’t and CAN’T get a good job. Their 401′s aren’t doing so well and I have compassion for them. I could list NUMEROUS other hijinks this aministration is pulling on the American people, but to list them all would take a full newspaper page and then some! Ella you didn’t give any reason TO vote for Romney. Just ramblings of a Fox laundry list against Obama. You didn’t even state any policy issues that impact you that Obama has done that you disapprove of. Its easy to point at a leader and find any faults you want, but you don’t offer anything that would be an improvement.
The GOP is running an “anyone but Obama” campaign without even realizing what an anemic a canidate that they actually picked. They just realized their mistake this week with Romney’s asinine statements insulting half of the electorate.

“Fox laundry list” THATS funny. Guess the Daily Kos, Media Matters and Huffington Post is the truthful cource for all things political. Reasons I am voting for Romney;
1) Doesn’t have numerous questionable associates.
2) Doesn’t support partial birth anortions
3) Doesn’t believe he’s above the Constitution when making appointments and decisions
4) Has verifiable and very successful private sector experience
5) Has verifiable and successful leadership experience (Turned a $3 Billion deficit into a $2 Billion surplus. Made the 2002 Winter Olympics profitable, when very few are)
6) Knows the difference between U.S & Russian WarShips and Turkish Jets
7) Paul Ryan, A Vice President you aren’t afraid having a heart beat away from being in charge. (Where is Ol’ Joe lately? Back in the closet with his coloring books?)
8) Don’t believe he’ll be apologizing or bowing down to all other countries
9) Seems to be honest and truthful
10) Will probablt set a budget (which IS required by law but ignored)
11) Will spend more time working on the nations problems and not spend so much time “hangin” with the big names of Hollywood.
12) Has compassion for people and not contempt if they disagree
13) Hopefully will bring us out of the entitlement mess (bad when more people are signing up for food stamps and disability during the month than they are finding jobs)
14) Obama himself added another reason to vote for Mitt when he said immigration reform was his greatest failure the last 4 years. What about unemployment?
15) Obama on Occupy movement, “We are on their side” Another good reason to vote for Romney.
16) Romney won’t desecrate the flag with his own image or symbol
There’s more but these are my basic reason for voting for Romney.

#5: Then why not run on his Governor record? Could it be that pre Mitt, Mass had unemployment below the national average. After Mitt, Mass unemployment was above national average. Oh and there is Romneycare, that he hides from.
#7: Really? heart attack joke after our last VP?? LOL and the Ryan budget will gut Medicaid, Medicare, and Pell Grants, but help millionairs in tax cuts. Poor < Rich.

That has to be close to the top of his failure list. That should be the commander and chiefs number one priority! His war on coal and natural gas and oil is crippling us, another security risk! We don’t have cleaner energy to replace those with at any price. Again helping our enemies more then us.
How about the trillions and trillions in bailout money, where is that? I could go on too, but for know let me say that the (anybody but) is a sorry place to be in but that’s where obama has led us.

“: Then why not run on his Governor record? “— Why isn’t obama running on his successful Presidential record instead of the constant sliming of his opponent. Google how he’s won his elections in the past. Ya, that’s sure someone that I’d vote for.

Why so defensive, ellamay? Or deano? Or pat e.? Everybody’s already figured out who you’re going to vote for.
However, your 3 “anybody but Obama” votes (going all Rush Limbaugh on us) won’t come close to delivering MN (or IA or WI) to Romney. Perhaps you ought to consider packing up and moving somewhere where you can help Romney carry a state? “Red” states can be very welcoming. You’ll find that Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana residents largely share your point of view and opinions. You’ll also find that the quality of life (education, health care, etc.) falls far below what we enjoy. But, hey, you’ll be among folks who think like you. And, no snow! You REALLY need to get over the English lessons and show WHY you support a total failure! Who really cares how someone spells when they are quickly adding comments? Spelling is the LEAST of our problems when we have a total failure leading the country. Tell us PLEASE, what is so great about obama! I’m a stickler for good English because I don’t suffer fools. I make no apologies for pointing out your poor grammar and spelling. Perhaps you should apologize to the rest of the readers for making them work so hard to try to make sense of whatever it is you’re trying to say. Your thoughts, when expressed in crude, rambling statements devoid of punctuation, are just too darn hard to decipher. Smart people appreciate clear, concise commentary from people who don’t feel the need to scream (cap letters, dozens of !!!) , name call (jack a??, really!), and who keep their cool.
I know this is just a comments section in a small town newspaper, but if you want people to think you’re smarter than you appear and value what you say, the ball’s in your court. Your disdain and lack of respect for others is obvious in your responses to others. Lighten up, it’s only a blog. You’ll live longer.

Still.. No reason to vote for obama. That’s what I thought. I can’t think of any either. As you can see there are tons of reasons not to. Romney has had economical and financial successes. He has experience with what we need the most right now. Big business is at the heart of our financial troubles and I’m thinking that they might be just what it is going to take to get us out. They are just going to keep sitting on their money until the dems are out. Don’t forget they need us as a market, if we are all broke they can’t sell their products back to the Chinese that they have been paying 30 cents an hour. Hopefully they have learned a lesson, too. That’s just some of my reasoning but at any rate I can’t see voting for a proven failure again. If Romney gets there and also fails I wouldn’t vote for him again either. We do not want to go back to the same failed policies that tanked the economy in the first place, and we will fight for our personal freedoms and choices. Obama is in our corner. He deserves 4 more years to clean up the mess he inherited and to ensure that no one goes broke because they get sick. He stands behind woman and their decisions about their own bodies, and he shows compassion for Dreamers and LGBT. He kept his promise to end two wars and even though there is around 30 straight months of job growth, he knows more work needs to be done and he has a plan that will help small business owners grow the economy from the middle out.
Obama does these things not because they are easy, but because they are the right thing to do.

As far as the economy, he did inherit a mess. Them he made it way worse. No, voting for the same thing again and expecting a different result is insane.

It shows in the amount of his charitable contributions over the past 10 years or so. Would YOU give over 30% of your income away? Does obama (after gifting thousands of dollars to his daughters to avoid the tax hit) give 30%?

“Nope, i get the real numbers from the real sources. Deportation in 2011 was a record high. Fact. From the actual government agency and not the world class and often referenced Marietta Daily Journal.”— You are so funny and predictable. Touting numbers from the current governmen, run by Obama! Of course they’re gonna fudge the numbers, etc. (like the unemplyment rate). C’mon, seriously? Turning someone back at the border and they count it as a deportation? LOL. You have too much faith in the manipulators in charge of the numbers!

Then where the h*ll would you get the actual deportation numbers? If not from the people and organization that ACTUALLY DEPORTS PEOPLE??? But the good ol’ folks at the Marietta Daily Journal are the experts and really know the truth and real numbers. I suppose you don’t take medications or eat food either, because this government tells you its safe. Your complete distrust of anything government is not laughable, but pathetic.

“Might as well be Elmer Fudd for President / 2012″ Well I don’t think the current vice-president can run against the President unless he is nominated to do so. Until then, Elmer will have to wait till 2016.
“No president in my lifetime has ever made me so proud to be an American as Barack Obama has!”Are you really Michelle? She wasn’t proud of America either until she started getting her cushy tax payer supported vacations!

Now, Ellamay, you SHOULD know that Elmer Fudd’s a Republican. Rush Limbaugh said so, and he’d never lie. Nice, though feeble, attempt at humor, though.
Is there ANYTHING that you can’t complain about? Does anything make you happy? Is your life that miserable that all you can do it fire potshots at other people’s comments? I’ve lived a long time, and I’ve never seen anything like it. How old are you? 12?

“Is there ANYTHING that you can’t complain about? Does anything make you happy? Is your life that miserable that all you can do it fire potshots at other people’s comments? ” Wait till I start firing potshots at peoples spelling! ( all you can do it fire potshots )” it fire??” You would think people would proof read their posts before hitting the submit button. You should really apologize to the other readers for making them try to figure out just what you are attempting to say. ” I’ve lived a long time, and I’ve never seen anything like it. How old are you? 12? Really?” You’ve then led a very sheltered life. Watch ANY political commercial or commentary, and you get more potshots than you can stomach, ( turn on MSNBC for 10 minutes, you’ll get your fill) no matter what side they come from. And for your info, though it’s really no ones business, I’m 59. And I didn’t wake up this morning, look at who’s running for President and exclaim; “Wow, look at what hes’ done for the country over the last four years! I want more of that!”

Geez. Good job on proofreading my post and finding the “it” instead of “is”! I hope that this skill will now be employed in your own posts. I must congratulate you for much improved spelling and sentence structure. It’s still not 100% comprehensible, but you’re getting there. I’d like to believe I had a role in that. You may now go back and proofread what you wrote above and you’ll see what I mean. In the meantime, I’ll give myself an A-.
As for potshots, you should only be paying attention to your own tone, and how you frequently take a pitbull approach when challenged. You can switch the channel, bite your tongue, leave the room, turn off the computer. I’ve got broad shoulders and can certainly bear the brunt of your caustic comments. Others don’t deserve it, just because their opinions differ from yours. It would be very easy to “unload” on you for your snarky attitude, but that’s not the point of the comments section. Stop being so defensive. (Easier said than done, but give it a try.)
You didn’t answer my question – and probably won’t – but what DOES make you happy? Anything? I hope you find joy in something.
Is there some reason why every comment you make has to contain some passive-aggressive statement about the President, his wife, VP Biden, the MSM, immigration, deportation, or what-have-you? You portray yourself as a victim. And at 59, you should be able to control that.
I don’t care if my comments here get 500 “thumbs down”, or if you’re the only one who sees it. You won’t believe it, but I’m trying to be constructive here.

“. Nice, though feeble, attempt at humor, though.” Poor sentence structure. The second “though” was not needed as it had been stated prior. Just pointing that out because I know your a “stickler” and all.

“though feeble” — It’s a parenthetical expression, and I used it correctly. Ask any English teacher. Apology accepted.

What you are saying you want and what obama is offering are complete opposites. Socialism just doesn’t support freedoms and choices.
I can always count on you to take something and turn it into whatever you want it to be. Facts never bother you one bit, but hey, can’t blame me for trying.
If you are thinking of Nazi socialism, remember, it was socialism in name only. It was really right ring fascism that headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.
Liberalism is the freedom of the individual, parliamentary systems of government, nonviolent modification of political, social, or economic institutions to assure unrestricted development in all spheres of human endeavor, and governmental guarantees of individual rights and civil liberties.
If were screwed either way, I’m going with that party that will let me take Plan B in the morning.
Obama tax care probably will not keep you from going broke if you get really sick. What it does is make sure you pay for someone else’s insurance so that the hospitals will get paid.
Wrong however feel free to support Romney’s plan and if you have no health insurance, no problem, freeloading in the ER is now all good.
As far as the economy, he did inherit a mess. Them he made it way worse. No, voting for the same thing again and expecting a different result is insane.
Yes, he made it so much worse with over 30 consecutive months of job growth and a soaring stock market. I can really see how you get that it’s so much worse now.

Just a little background. I’ve been posting here for seven years. I think I’m the longest running poster here. I’ve seen a lot of posters come and go, I’ve been attacked and thumbed down by the best, yet I’m still here. I think I’ve been hidden maybe three times max in all the years, I think for sure not four times in one thread. I try to stay away from personal attacks, if possible. What I’ve found is that if another poster personally attacks you ( calls you names), criticizes your spelling, tells you to take a hike, they have already lost the argument. They have no valid opinion or comment to make, what they are doing however is keeping the thread going helping you express your valid points, so take the opportunity!

Congratulations on your longevity, Deano. I don’t know if there’s a certificate for that, or not. Usually when one engages in an activity for many years (sports, piano playing, ballroom dancing, fiction writing) they get better over time. Practice should make perfect. Only you can judge if you’ve gotten better. But thanks for hanging in there!
Not sure what you mean by this: “They have no valid opinion or comment to make, what they are doing however is keeping the thread going helping you express your valid points, so take the opportunity!” If you’re accusing people of “beating a topic to death”, you should look in the mirror. Of the 62 comments (so far) on this thread, you wrote 17, Ellamay 14. A full 50% from 2 posters. For the record, I had 9.

So about half of yours were Hidden. That’s another thing personal attacks will get you! Not long ago the moderator would boot posters off the site that perpetrated them. So Congratulations yourself!

Moderators still do.
Please stick to the topic and be civil, and we won’t have to.
Incidentally, threads on Areavoices have reached more than 500 comments before. That was awesome, especially since the vast, vast majority were on topic (with a few tangents).

“Yes, he made it so much worse with over 30 consecutive months of job growth and a soaring stock market. I can really see how you get that it’s so much worse now.”— Naughtydog, he still has a negative 3.25 million jobs to make up. I realize that he has had 30 consecutive months of job growth (Bush had 52 consecutive months,) and thats good, hope it continues. The REAL unemployment rate (before all the non counting and smoke & mirrors) is closer to 17%. You say “Bin Ladens dead & GM is alive.” Bin Laden is dead because of the intelligence garnered by the Bush Administration, and Valerie Jarrett forcing Obama to quit squirming. Since Obama has taken over, we’ve gotten no intelligence to work with.GM, if you haven’t noticed, is basically on life support and will be in the same position very shortly. Their’s seems to be the only stock that is going no where. We tax payers are put on the hook for how many thopusands of dollars for every Volt that is sold? Would you personally make an item that costs you say, !00.00 to make, then sell it for $40.00? I don’t think so. Every child born today owes over $40,000.00 to the Government. The deficit has risen nearly 5 Trillion dollars in three short years, but it “doesn’t matter in the short term.” He’s more than happy to saddle evryones kids and grandkids with massive debt. There are so many reasons I could list for not voting for Obama but I don’t have all week.

I’m more tha willing to have a civil debate on why you should or shouldn’t vote for a specific candidate. Just leave out the hyper-partisan hyperbole you get from hyper-paretisan media sources. Read many different sources, then base your arguments on that. There is so many things not being reported because it could shed a bad light on someone. You want a civil debate? Ok. What do you think of Obamas claim that health insurance will go down and save families $2,500.00 when in fact, since portions of his healthcare plan have taken effect, they have cost families $3000.00 MORE!

What a load. What any of that has to do with the topic is beyond anyone. I can’t stop laughing. You’ve been hidden so many times that you complain about the red checkers and you’ve taken long hiatuses because you get your feelings hurt over the red checks hiding your posts! Either you’re lying or you need a memory check.
So back to the topic. He’s an info graphic for you.

In Obama’s third year, 2011, more private sector jobs were created than in seven of the eight years Bush was in the White House.
Bush relied on government jobs while the private sector scaled back, while under Obama, the public sector has lost jobs while businesses expanded.
By contemporary Republican standards, this means Bush was a far more effective big-government socialist than Obama.
I know, I know, it’s not a Fox based info site so you’ll instantly reject it. It’s based in fact but that matters not to you.
Obama is winning in most of the swing states.
Did you vote yet? Early voting by absentee ballot started yesterday in almost half the states, including Minnesota.
