Richard Aregood and Richard Shafer, Grand Forks, column: Digital-age reporters still need traditional skills
September 15, 2012 at 7:05 pm in Grand Forks Herald
It’s not enough to write off traditional journalism, as blogger Rob Port seems to want to do. The fact that Port, a talented communicator, feels the need to write columns for the Herald while criticizing this venerable Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper for its traditionalism, says something about his need for certification as a news reporter and critic. And when the newspaper editor won’t approve a story out of fear of losing an advertiser…what then? Port doesn’t have that fear hanging over him like Forum Communications does. Ad dollars trump facts for our local newspaper and television stations.

” this venerable Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper”
Just a point of clarification. The Pulitzer was not for journalism, but a special award for community service for continuing to function during the flood.

I suspect Aregood and Shafer still listen to music on their eight-track tape decks.

Reading the paper yesterday…this article…while watching political TV and realizing I couldn’t watch some of the political shows I used to watch, and most others across the country still have access to. Also noticing that on Sunday and throughout the week on TV there are infomercials on in place of other network talk shows. With a little research (I was shocked to find) and realized that all forms of media in this area are owned by the same company.
So if this one company decides which ‘network’ shows are aired…and articles printed in newspapers…is this, or could this be considered censorship in some way? By doing this, is the media trying to control, affect, or promote a certain agenda or attitude of the public?
If it is…I’m shocked that this is happening in this area of the country in 2012. It makes this area the same as ‘the few other areas’ in the USA that are known for their closely monitored information outlets. I’m shocked that this is happening in this area connected to so many schools of ‘higher ed.’
The same as having ONE HOSPITAL/HEALTH SYSTEM. If a person were to have a complaint…. I have heard that it is well known that it does or will affect any future cares if needed.
I’m shocked and surprised by some of the unsaid and ‘dirty little secrets’ ignored by many. This area has so many attributes….I’m shocked this control by a few ‘BIG’ conglomerates is acceptable to such a well educated public.
I am grateful to have a computer.

Every time the Herald buries a story, and it has on numerous occasions, it’s engaging in censorship. Yet this is the same paper that screams bloody murder about open record laws.
