Bear hunting success is mixed, but some big bruins have been taken
September 15, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Bear hunting success has been mixed so far in Minnesota’s bear season, which opened Sept. 1. But for some hunters, and especially for bear-hunting guides, the season is going well.

People take joy in killing these great animals? That’s just sad on so many levels.

I completely agree. To see these beautiful animals dead as a result of a sport – sick.

That’s a beautiful bear! It would look great as a mount in the cabin living room, that’s for sure.

Why do anti hunters scream animal cruelty as they are sitting down to a steak dinner? Have you ever seen a video of some slaughterhouses? I hunt to provide food for my family, not for the “enjoyment of killing something”. I do enjoy getting out in the woods, and experiencing all that our beautiful north woods has to offer. All the hunters that I hunt with love to harvest a trophy animal, but they also respect and are grateful to that animal for giving it’s life to provide food for them. Next time you trash a hunter just think that your probably trashing your grandpa or his grandpa for providing for his family. Congrats to the hunters in this article for harvesting these amazing animals, and for keeping an ageless tradition alive.

I have nothing against hunting. My one minor irritation is when someone kills the animal and then says…”isn’t it amazing?” No…it was amazing up until the moment it was shot. Now it is dead. Don’t hold it’s head up, smile for the camera and then show me the photo. Just clean it and put it in the freezer.

Riding around on ATVs dumping piles of donuts and shooting what comes to them is an ageless tradition?

Bear meat is good. There is no difference between shooting a deer and shooting a bear. The plains Indians ran buffalo over cliffs to kill them on occassion. Nobody complains about that.

Speaking of buffalo, the white men almost wiped them out just for the hides. At least the indians used the buffalo for many things and not much went to waste.

So recently while hiking on a trail, a man walked up to me and my dog and said, “There is another hunter in the woods about a quarter mile away. We have a trail cam set up, there is a bear walking through here every night, so we will be hunting in here for the next couple of days.” I told him I usually walk the trail once or twice a day with my dog, and asked him if he would like me to stop (I don’t hunt I have no clue if I would scare away a bear). And he laughed at me and said, “Don’t worry about it, we have you on trail cam and the bear walked past 5 minutes before you and 10 minutes after you.” So everyday I am walking my trail with my dog, and everyday they are hunting in the woods right there. They give a whistle as I go by and I wave at them (even as I don’t see them) and they have yet to get that bear. No baiting, just sitting in the woods, waiting for a big old bear to amble by! On a side note, I am wearing blaze orange, and my poor dog has to wear a orange coat, which she hates.

ah yes, trail cams. Another part of the ageless donut-ATV tradition.
