Our view: Expect to be impressed by new middle schools
September 14, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
When you go check out Duluth’s new middle schools Sunday and please do take advantage of the 1-5 p.m. open houses at both Lincoln Park and Ordean East (you do own the buildings, after all) pay particular attention to the details.

Washable walls, “some” classes with views of the lake, and lights that turn off when you leave the room. Wow! Somehow my disgust with the Duluth School Board have suddenly melted away. Thanks DNT for finally helping me understand what the definition of a “wise” choice is. Lets see how excited the teachers are about all this great stuff when their contract is up and there is no money for teachers or raises. I’m sure we willbetter understand the wisdom then. Again thanks for educating a guy with a master’s degree in education who was educated in Duluth in those “old” buildings, where the class sizes were rarely less than 30. I guess I didnt realize how terrible I had it. Totally changed my mind on this topic.

Darn well better for the a price tag of 50 million dollars. People would be more impressed if the students do well also.

Seems we forget what the schools are for, education. Will the deplorable scores increase or decrease because of shiny “stuff”. Short time we’ll know..!

Could your “dripping” editorial be anymore obvious? As the lead cheerleader for the Red Plan – you are getting what we ALL PAID FOR. Coincidently the head of the editorial board lives just footsteps away from this brand new school and I am sure this will positively impact his property values. I am sure the school is beautiful – and it should be for 50 million – but again, at what price? Over 36 teachers laid off and class sizes at an all time high. What part of education is tied to the fields, the copper, the self dimming lights – the list goes on and on. And I am still waiting to see some investigative reporting comparing previous utility costs, transportation costs etc. – anxious to see if all those expensive efficiencies = the savings. DNT – it’s time you did an article on this for the taxpayers.

“Make Duluth a better place.” Outdated outlook. People care more about education, not the buildings. DNT is for anything new and shiny, shallow thinking. Equating new with better at a huge price tag is pathetic.

These schools, especially the grossly unnecessary middle school marring the hill, symbolize how wrong things can go when a school board has no checks and balances and did not have to go before the public with a reasonable plan and then have a vote by the taxpaying public. Waste, abuse, arrogance.
