I notice they do not mention that this initiative is based on Michelle Obama’s Move program that she started several years ago. But then they would probably say they got the idea all by themselves!

Thanks for the comment. The idea didn’t come from us — it came from our members. We held statewide forums last spring and the topic of physical activity, and childhood obesity in particular, was mentioned several times as a concern of our members. The details of our statewide platform, ‘The Official Sponsor of Recess,’ and the ‘Recess YES!’ program grew out of discussions between BCBSND and our partner, Flint Communications. The more groups that are advocating for health and wellness the better! We welcome the efforts of Mrs. Obama and other groups to promote physical activity. We hope that our contributions and the work of others will help improve the health and wellness of all North Dakotans.

Actually, it’s probably based on research. See:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0091743509003557
Results: When imaginative teachers use physical activity to teach academic concepts the children learn better (than with a sitting down approach) and improve fitness.
Bottom line: Good move by BCBS
