It’s Our Turn – A newbie’s take on Alexandria

I was riddled with “senioritis,” approaching finals, dealing with roommate situations, and just plain ready to be done with college. I’d had enough to last a lifetime. But, with less than a month left, I hadn’t even begun to think about where I would apply for a job, where a writing major was needed. Continue Reading

ROFL…….Well, I’m happy for you. However, just remember this little piece of advice…..you’re still in the “honeymoon” stage, the “reality” of living in Alexandria hasn’t hit you yet. When it does, you’ll wish you never moved there. Oh, there are some that say its wonderful, but they’re the ones that have paid off homes, and still have jobs and great incomes. I lived there for about a dozen years. Just left one day, couldn’t handle it anymore. Was working FIVE different jobs, all paid me crap. The gas was going up, the food prices were soaring, the rent went up, the winters are HORRIBLE, and yet, the pay stayed the same, the summers were SHORT, and the clicks from people are everywhere. If you tell them you’re from “out of town”, they’ll treat you like you have a disease. Minnesota Nice? Yes, its some places, but dont be fooled, a lot are not as “nice” as you’d think. They’re nice if YOU are doing something for THEM. So, give it a while. When theres no food in your fridge, and your work cuts your hours, and you are too poor for welfare and (I was) and the gas keeps going up, etc….just look on the “bright” side, winters just around the corner!!!
Glad I left, I have NO regrets. Alexandria is a wonderful place, if you’re a MILLIONAIRE who owns a fishing boat and and ice fishing house!!!

Wow Jayne Dough!!!
You should probably pull your blinders off if you think Alexandria is the only city in the state (or nation for that matter) that has seen a rise in cost of living without a pay raise. My father had a small farm outside of Alexandria(still today) and works a job and makes ends meet. He is in no way a millonaire but with smart spending he survives and raised 4 children on a smaller income.
I grew up in Alexandria and still LOVE the city however I now work in the metro and live in a small north metro town. The raises our company gives out does not follow the cost of living and I have had to adjust my spending- and I also work a 2nd job part-time.
There are opportunities in Alexandria if you work hard and work to find the jobs. In any city a good education and “know how” is a must- so for you to act like Alexandria is a horrible place is not true. Alexandria is a good clean city that even “blue collar folk” can enjoy and live in.
