Using a stencil, four workers spent eight hours Wednesday painting the new UND hockey logo on the main rink at UND’s Ralph Engelstad Arena. Continue Reading

Could they have possibly gotten more generic? That is an embarrassment.

Wow, I agree. When I saw this picture my heart sank into my stomach and I wanted to cry. Sad sad sad sad…

It is worse than I first imagined. It says Altru in the top right. Why on the ice? Anything is for sale these days.

Another sad day in history. I wish the Engelstad family would repossess the place and lock UND out of it.

Then UND can tell them to move the building since the land is property of the state.

The REA needs the million plus UND pays per year to run the place.
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 23 35
Sorry, Gene. It’s better than the $3 million they’d lose running this monster themselves.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 29 5
Oh, I agree completely. The true gift is UND not getting the place.

Seriously, Dakotashoe-man? Repossess the place? What does that even mean? Why would they.. Who?WHAT?

What a sad moment in history. I’m sure the herald will print this picture front page, above the fold tomorrow. They will treat it like we won WW2 or something. I wonder if a “lets humiliate UND Fighting Sioux fans” party will follow in the community room at the herald? I agree with DakotaDocMartin, shut the place down and mail the keys to the Engelstad family. What a disgrace.

As much as I like the Fighting Sioux name and logo and own 7 Hockey jerseys, 4 jackets, 6 hats, 5 hoodies, 2 bags, golf club covers & golf bag, countless t-shirts, a sticker on my car, a sign in my man cave, and other Fighting Sioux logo covered items… it’s time to move on.
First world problems people…. first world problems.

To be honest I am surprised it happened this quickly. Kudos to those in charge. Strong work.
That said, I would have preferred the interlocking ND or the UND like on my class ring.

Just win! It looks great on the ice and it will look even better on a banner!

I’m not sure winning is in the cards this year. I hope so. Maybe we can get Parise back for part of the season since the NHL seems bent on another lock out.
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 8 52
Don’t pay much attention do you? They made it all the way to the regionals last year with a make-shift team. Lost only a couple of guys from that team. Winning is in the cards this year. In fact it is going to be a real good year.

Like I said Jack, I hope you are right, but I am not sure. I would love to be wrong. We have some solid players but very little depth. If we get another string of injuries we are in deep trouble.
The biggest problem with college hockey is all the good ones leave after their sophomore year. I can’t blame them, I would too, but it leaves a talent and leadership vacuum that is hard to fill.
As for getting to the regionals. We did very well, and I suspect we will be there again this year. That said, like the poor olympian who came in fourth said last month: there is no worst feeling in the world than being fourth.

There was a great commentary a while back which pointed out that Hakstol recruits skaters and puch handlers and wants them to play thug hockey, like he did. His success in the regular season gets stomped in the playoffs. Both Berenson and Lucia absolutely outcoached him in the last two playoff games. He got a new fat contract. My bet is he will not see a whole lot of the incentive money.

I love UND hockey. I will be a fan until they plant me. That said, I find it amusing that any negative comments regarding the team are regarded as blasphemy. I guess people are still stuck in the either/or stage of development — everything is either all good or all bad. I would argue that shades of gray is more than just a soft porn novel for frustrated housewives.
I still believe the FS debacle hurt UND more than people realize. Especially since it happened at the same time as the Canadian leagues started to make a big push for relevance.
We have not seen our last National Championship, but I don’t think it will be this year. If I am wrong I will be the first one on these board asking for a second helping of crow.

Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 13 44
I take high offense at that remark FN. Stupid crap like that makes people disagree with whatever you say based on the fact that YOU say it.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 27 11
Sorry you disagree Jacquelyn. And all of God’s people said AMEN is a common use saying showing support; not a religious pronouncement. It may have started life that way, but it lost any significant religious meaning long ago.
As for people disagreeing with me: when you are as active as I am on the boards on the editorial page, the love hate relationship is long established and very little will change it. Sad but true.
Under another thread we were discussing diversity and I routinely got 4 dislikes for every like. No one challenged my assertion that there is no such thing as a typical American, we are far to heterogenous for that or that if we were a one color one culture country like Sweeden or Japan we would never have been a world power. No one argued I was wrong, they just showed their dislike for the sentiment, and the fact I am always bashing ND insistence on believing we are still in the 1960s.

Think i would have rather seen the ND emblem.
North Dakota is too generic and doesnt seem to represent the University.
The ND emblem means the same thing except it is University specific.
Just my two cents worth.

I thought the new official color of UND was black.
Like or Dislike: 12 4
Agreed. They can repaint it next year. This year is just temporizing; waiting for more definitive guidance from on high
Like or Dislike: 5 12
What an embarassing logo that is, That is a reason not to return to see another hockey game. They should find a new team to play in the arena, UND can move back into their old arena.

Old Ralph or new Ralph. They were both built to honor the same man. I fail to see how the change would make your point.
Like or Dislike: 10 13
My friend, you’re trying to use logic with a bunch of two-yr-olds.
Like or Dislike: 12 10
Actually, the Old Ralph was already up and running. They named it after him after he pledged $5 million for hockey. It was at that time the birthday parties came out.
Like or Dislike: 13 2
Wasn’t it the Cliff “Fido” Purpur Arena up until that point? What a rip off that was. Cliff did more for hockey in ND than RE ever did.
Like or Dislike: 3 7
Purpur Arena is over by Washington and Demers. The Old Ralph actually replaced the Barn on 2nd Ave. It was built by student fees, which is why they got free admission. The REA changed that.
Like or Dislike: 8 2
I am familiar with where the current Purpur Arena is but I was under the assumption it was a bone given to Purpur after RE made his financial contribution for naming rights. Oh well…my info in based on what I heard not what I was around to see first hand. Thank you for the local history lesson Gene. You live…you learn.

Second rate logo for a second rate University……perfect.
I have to admit tho….FN was right about the Engelstads.
It appears it really was all about the money.
The U of Screw the Sioux and the Moneystad family. ….and theNnCaAzAi….
. They deserve each other.
Hot debate. What do you think? 12 18
Once Ralph withdrew his monetary pledge for an arena (and academics) and decided to build it himself, set up a private corporation, and “gift” it to UND at some vague time in the distant future, it was clear the building was all about him and his hubris. I would be interested if the place operates in the black though.
Like or Dislike: 12 7
Very few operate in the black, but as Ralph says, if the nickname changes, doze the place. That option Might be more profitable than operating in the red if they do. It is what casino’s do when profits go bad.
Like or Dislike: 7 1
No, Ralph built the arena for the program. We have all seen the letter.
I am sure if he were still around the arena would be destroyed….as it should be.
It stands for nothing anymore…a pathetic monument to the money grubbing cowards in the athletic programs, the sneaky little snitch, Berkely Bob and the arrogant elitist liberals at the Kehlsteinhaus.

That’s like me buying you a car, keeping the title in my name, and charging you to drive it.
Like or Dislike: 11 5
No doubt there was some ego invoved…..that does not diminish the contribution.
He was willing to give that up AND about fifty million dollars….that is the fact.
Unfortunatly…..it would appear his heirs have no respect for Mr. Engelstad….or any respect for themselves.
Hey….the NEW generation…..great, isn’t it.
Like or Dislike: 6 10
What exactly does the contribution consist of?
Like or Dislike: 6 4
It is the finest hockey facility in the nation.
The point is….Ralph had the integrity to stand up to the University and the NCAA….to the tune of fifty million
Like or Dislike: 15 8
It’s isn’t a contribution when you pay to use it. And what $50 million? It cost $104.
Like or Dislike: 7 5

Good, you take over, FN.
Like or Dislike: 5 5
Ralph put at least 50 million when he made the ultimatum to keep the name or he was out.
That is called putting your money where your mouth is.
Like or Dislike: 10 5
It’s called bluffing knowing full well the hicks on the SBHE wouldn’t call him. Never play poker with a casino owner.
Like or Dislike: 15 3
He fought for what he believed in…. More than can be said for the majority in this debacle.
Like or Dislike: 12 9
‘m on record on speaking to the hyocritical cowardice of the SBHE, both in giving into Ralph for an arena, and to the NCAA for a conference. Ralph’s problem was that he believed the money for the arena meant he owned UND.
Seriously, Gene, flyingnurse. Leave this guy alone. By every measure, he’s part of the dust.

He has a right to speak. Let him speak. The rest of you ramble on so what’s the difference?
I didn’t say otherwise. I’m just asking a couple of people to ignore him.

Why? What did he do?

Well, here’s some of his work in half a day (Sept. 8): Second rate University, U of Screw, Moneystad family, NnCaAzAi, a pathetic monument to the money grubbing cowards, sneaky little snitch, Berkely Bob and the arrogant elitist liberals at the Kehlsteinhaus, his heirs have no respect for Mr. Engelstad. Devilschild: you say engage, I say ignore, but I agree we all have a right to post comments. This type of approach isn’t worth engaging. You disagree. Fair enough.
Oh I see. Where is he? I want to talk to him. Oh…there he is. Excuse me Alvin.

Listen to me. You need to tone it down. Your remarks are offensive. I saw the list. Look for yourself. It is quite long. You get away with too much. Clean it up. Now stand up straight and act like a man. Suck in your gut. Okay there. That’s better. Now behave. Don’t say it. Don’t get mouthy with me. Just do as you are told and smile. It does wonders.

During the games you won’t even notice the center ice logo. You’ll be watching one of the greatest hockey teams, play in the best arena at one of the best universities in the country. It’s all going to be fine folks. There’s lots more to our school than just a a logo.
” You’ll be watching one of the greatest hockey teams, play in the best arena at one of the best universities in the country.”
You must be talking about when Boston University comes on November 2nd and 3rd.
I personally enjoy the DU/UND matchups. I did my prerequisites for nursing school at DU back in the Dark Ages.
I wear my ratty corduroy DU hatv& my UND hoodie.
My ring says UND. There are no divided loyalties; but nothing wrong staying true to your school either
