First lady’s message: Obama is just like you
September 4, 2012 at 8:17 pm in Grand Forks Herald
Michelle Obama’s message: President Barack Obama is just like you. “Barack knows the American Dream because he’s lived it,” the first lady told the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday in an address intended to reassure voters that her husband shares their values. Continue Reading

Oh yes, Barrack is just like us Michelle. He will be like over 20,000,000 Americans in early November: unemployed and looking for a job.

In the interest of civility, I will make actual comparisons. I own and run my own business; President Obama has never owned or ran his own business. I have never worked for the government; he has only worked for the government, government supported organizations or quasi-government entities (private Universities). I am not a politician; he is a politician and has been for a majority of his adult life. I have employed up to 28 people; he has never employed anyone other than domestic household workers (I clean my own home). I worked while getting higher education to avoid debt and government subsidies; he embraced debt and government subsidies. I left home when I was 17; he claims to have had substantial family support (not a bad thing, but very different than me). Without me, my business would likely cease to exist; he has never worked in a job where he could not be replaced. I believe that my effective marginal income tax rate of 42% (state and federal) is a fair share; he thinks I should pay more. Fortunately Romney hasn’t made the same claim that he is “just like me”; I may have even less in common with him.

Very interesting Joe! I think these are the reasons why he is not a good leader. To be proud of debt and gov’t help is very telling and makes sense why there is a “no big deal” attitude towards the national debt. So when you add in property tax, sales taxes, gov’t fees like licenses, guessing you are paying over 50% in taxes. People, what is a fair share??

Realist, absolutely. It is something that differentiates me from both candidates. The premise of the article was that President Obama is just like me; he is not. Neither the article nor my comment provide any suggestion that Paul Ryan is like me; he is not. You’ve created your own controversy. Please note that I do not think government work is bad nor do I think someone who has only worked in government positions is unqualified. However, I do think there is value in having some work experience in the private sector as well as value in the experience of owning and operating your own business. That doesn’t mean every business person is a good candidate. But again, back to the premise of the article and the assertion that President Obama is just like me; he is not.

Response to Joe Smith:
Your implication is that it is not right to take government help to go to college. You should work instead. Using Bill Clinton’s basic math and UND’s website the cost of tuition + room and board is $13586/years + books $1000/year = $14586/year. I am using the minimum wage of $7.25/hour in my calculation. There are ~ [(40 working hours/week) * 4 wks/month]*12 months/yr = 1920 working hrs/year. Number of hrs earning $7.25/hr to equal $14586(und cost) = $14586/$7.25= 2012 hrs/yr. We are short 92 hours in which to earn our college costs. Unless we ask our parents to pay ( a Romney suggestion) we have a shortfall and also when do we study.

Obama believes that the rest of the nation is just too dumb to be able to step up to the challenge, that we need Government to tell us what to do and how to do it.
I dont need 4 more years of him showing us his success, i need someone who is going to fix the country.

“Good grief, did any of you actually listen to what the First Lady said in her speech? I think you would have actually liked it. She said a lot about hard work and struggle, about valuing family and the support family and friends provide us.”——- Yea, I heard what she said, and didn’t buy a single line of her lying diatribe. Struggles? Her? She attended the elite school, Whitney Young, the public magnet school for Chicago’s upper class. She accepted to an Ivy League school despite undistinguished credentials, and attended Harvard Law School.
Upon marriage theypurchased a $277,500 two-bedroom condo in 1993–a high price even by today’s standards. Several years later, they moved into their $1.65 million mansion in Hyde Park–with the help of fraudster Tony Rezko.
All this, along with the lavish vacations they have enjoyed on the tax payers dime since he was elected does NOT reflect “struggle” in my eyes, it reflects dishonesty in the rhetoric. BUT, I wouldn’t want to give up the star treatment and tax payer funded lavish surroundings and vacations either if I were they, so I guess lying justifies the end means in her case!

The spending is out of control. As a taxpayer if you were giving a bill or tab through three years and eight months of Obama, your tab is over $35,000 or about $800.00 per month. Here is your list of services for your $35,000 tab:
~Record 47,000,000 Americans on food stamps
~Less people working today than Jan 2009
~Over 23,000,000 Americans looking for work
~Double digit unemployment for Blacks and Hispanics
~Record unemployment for college grad
~6,000,000 unemployed women
~Gas more than doubling since Jan 2009 ($1.80 v. $3.81)
Please send in your first payment plus interest or just give the bill to your kids or your neighbors-they can probably afford it.

Son Leo, I am neither a politician nor an economist, but I will give you some examples. In late 2011 President Obama initiated a $787 billion dollar stimulus package that has resulted in virtually no impact on unemployment but increased the federal deficit. Deficit spending itself has surpassed 4 trillion dollars, and even President Obama has conceded that an insignificant portion of that amount would be offset by reversal of the “Bush” tax cuts. President Obama has instructed the executive branch to suspend welfare reform rules that were enacted during the Clinton Presidency resulting in significant increases in public welfare payments. Eligibility rules for SNAP have also been relaxed resulting in one-third of the United States being eligible for benefits despite no significant changes in real wages. The administration has implemented a policy of restricting interest rates which adversely impact retirees who had intended to support themselves through their savings while rewarding individuals who embraced excessive debt and uncontrolled spending.
Since we are posing questions, what part of President Obama’s economic plan, at its base level, can’t be summarized as taking income from one group and giving it to another group? For example, increase income tax “on the rich” to continue government benefit spending, increase the earnings limit for Social Security tax despite the fact that the top 10-15% of earners have been projected since 1990 to receive less benefits than they pay-in, and this year that number jumped to the top 40%, and adding a .9% to Medicare taxes for people earning over $200,000 as part of the new healthcare act. Promising to take from one group and give to another has great appeal for those on the receiving end, which in the case of income tax has now reached the 50% of the population. The promise of taking from “them” and giving it to “us” is very appealing; it plays into the human desire to believe that nothing is our own fault and any adversity that we have can be attributed to someone else. In contrast, reducing tax rates isn’t taking anything from anyone, but is simply returning what was previously theirs. Government has the ability to tax, but that does not mean my earnings are the property of the government until it decides how much I get to keep; my earnings are my property until the government tells me how much it intends to take. We can debate how much is everyone’s “fair share”, but that does not eliminate the basic fact that it is taking from one person to give to another.

Son Leo, I’ll assume your failure to even try to list a single policy that does not boil down to taking income from one individual and transferring it to another is an admission that all of President Obama’s policies at their base are transfers from one group to another. You criticize Chris Nixon for simply repeating what he has heard, but your response is devoid of any facts. Your example of highways is actually very poor. Highways are primarily built through the use of highway funds derived from taxes imposed on gasoline. While not perfect, it does allocate cost roughly on usage. As far as the remainder of the federal budget, there are several primary sources of revenue: Social Security taxes, Medicare taxes, income taxes and taxes imposed on capital gains. There are others such as miscellaneous excise taxes and the estate tax, but their impact on the budget is minimal. Everyone who has earnings pays both Social Security and Medicare, which are presumably returned directly to taxpayers; in actuality the highest 40% of earners are unlikely to receive back the same amount of Social Security as they paid in and the average recipient of Medicare benefits will receive back about $250,000 more than they paid in. That leaves income taxes and capital gains tax to pay the balance of the federal budget. Currently, 50% of this country does not pay income tax and an even smaller percentage pay capital gains. That means that with the exception of Medicare and Social Security, which are directly returned to taxpayers, that 50% of this country is not contributing to the federal budget.

How about the income coming from your and my taxes to make up for the taxes that the extremely wealthy aren’t paying their fair share of? How about the coporate welfare schemes that also come out of our taxes that only help the wealthy get even richer? Yet programs designed to help the general populace is somehow wrong….So what does the right have against the American people? I mean time after time they seem to take the side of the extremely wealthy over the working class. There’s not that many extremely wealthy so why are so many willing to defend these policies that go against their own best interests and the best interest of the extended American community………..Greed….Apparently there’s the idea that by protecting those interests of the very people who are finding more ways to pay less while getting more and making everyone else take up the slack…That somehow they too will be up there……..Hell pal….To even be middle class today you have to be a millionair….The vast majority of us are just the working class and no longer the midle class….Not when mega billionairs are at the top…..

However, I do not believe the polls are a reflection on whether President Obama’s economic policies are good for our country long-term or short-term. The polls are certainly not a reflection of whether or not President Obama is just like me (the premise of the article that is the subject of this blog). It is speculation on my part, but I think the polls reflect that a significant portion of the population is in favor of an economic policy based on taking from “them” to give to “us”.
