National GOP directing $3 million to North Dakota Senate ads
August 30, 2012 at 5:41 am in Grand Forks Herald
In part because of the flap over a Missouri Senate candidate’s comments about “legitimate rape,” national Republicans are directing more money to North Dakota bringing millions of dollars more in TV commercials to the state’s close Senate race. Continue Reading

So those of us contributing to Heidi have to what? Triple our donations to even stay in the game? Way too much money for what’s basically hiring the most qualified……I don’t know how we can do it, but we definitely need to find a way to do like England and limit the on air campaigns to four months

I was just someplace where they had the noon news on…..During that half hour there must have been a minimum of two commercials slamming each other at every break…….For those of you who actually think this is a good way to go…….That explains volumes of how things have become so screwed up……Your minds are just numb….No other explanation for how you can stand such a continual battery of garbage….
See here’s the thing……Some of us actually pay attention to what’s going on so I don’t need to be reminded hundreds of times why someone is wrong….and I don’t need fabrications to try to convince me the other is wrong….Shorten the process and force the politicians to stay on point. Talk about real plans….
This isn’t a sporting event where we need our team to win. We the people need to be an informed (Really informed from news and not opinion media) electorate, and not just a bunch of mindless consumers buying whatever garbage political commercials try to sell us

North Dakota is now down to effectively 1 Senate seat. This seat sold out much earlier this year to the special interest groups that belong to the Democrats and Republicans. Now it’s worse. These groups will virtually take over every vote that Berg or Heitkamp will make. Our candidates like to say that they “will bring the North Dakota Way to Washington”. Which is amusing because an overwhelming majority of the funding for these campaigns are funded by non-North Dakota interests.

Is that something new that they are funded by outside groups? Did Dorken and Gaylord get most of their monies from in state? Of course not. By the way, even though Hoeven is very moderate, he still counts as a senator.

No, of course special interest funding is hardly new. What’s different is the majority of THESE 2 campaigns are funded by them. Hoeven took (and/or was offered very little), for his campaign. He really didn’t need anything to help him out. Berg had a pretty significant lead, but it has diminished which has driven scads of cash from both spectrum’s of the outside groups.

I used to say that…..but there’s no “Best” involved what so ever…..Just the most over priced election process mony can buy.
I think one of the problems with why there’s not more people upset is because like so many things today…..It’s akin to a sporting match. Put huge amounts of money into long drawn out campaigns not for the people, but for the process, and the damn industry……..
Here’s one for you Justasec……go dust off a copy of Steppenwolf’s song…..”Monster”….Kind of sounds like what we have here

Most folks subscribe to one party of the other. It’s amazing how these partisans turn their candidates into the “second coming” regardless of how weak or how closely tied to special interests, that their candidates are. The Kool-Aid must taste pretty good for these folks.

Berg is a stooge for the big money interests showing up to bombard us with ads. He’s going to be voting however the big boys tell him to if he were to get to Washington. I realize that everybody in politics these days can not avoid some of the slime, but I believe Heidi Heitkamp has a very good track record for representing the best interests of North Dakota residence. I think she did a magnificant job in getting some cash for us out of the big tobacco settlement. Without her involvement in that settlement, the state wouldn’t have gotten nearly as much for our health programs. So, in my opinion, the Republicans are going to be paying a lot more for this senate seat than the Democrats even have in the bank. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen.

Probably not but again I think overall this type of case opens the can of worms on sueing for everything….Also, any AG could have done this. It reminds me when Dorgan, Conrad and Earl took credit for flooding funding in 1997. Same if Hoeven and Berg start taking credit for Minot funding, that be be BS.

Have you seen JD’s ad where he hints that he’s the reason oil is being drilled in the state? Please…who does that? Not an honest person that is for sure. And one more thing where does he stand on the child abuse issue on the SL reservation? I haven’t seen his name mentioned concerning that. He should be front and center on that issue. He was in office with Hoeven who also didn’t do anything to put an end to the abuse. Three Republican governors in a row haven’t done a thing to stop the abuse on the reservation. That is a shame. How can you people keep electing Al Carlson? He blocked legislation that would have paid for home visits to monitor the children in foster care from the reservation. Because of this foster children were later returned to their abusers. This is another shameful act. Doesn’t the Rep. Party care about Indian children? I don’t think they do.

TJ, I don’t know about your claims below but what the welfare state has done to destroy the Indians is the biggest shame. I don’t think it is fair to blame Repub govenors for what has gone on for many many decades. Gov’t programs will destroy the family structure fast…

Maybe you are right but if I were in a position of power I would have raised hell. Why the state of ND didn’t call in the Fed’s long before this is worth an explanation. But what can be done now is what is important. Hopefully the problem will be dealt with. Thank you for your response.

The real question is.. If Rick Berg is so good for this state, why do they have to put so much money into his campaign? Shouldn’t his record be enough to get him elected? Dorgan and Conrad were re-elected year after year on total budgets less than this…

That’s not his point, Chins. His point is the amount of funds that Berg and the special interests have been pouring into the campaign. It’s not just Berg, Heitkamp has the same funding machine-just different special interests. And both of these campaigns far exceed anything that Dorgan or Conrad had. Those 2 also always one by landslides, so the Republican special interests didn’t bother much with campaign cash. Side note: these special interests have made our democracy a train wreck. And people still wonder why the Democrat controlled Senate and Republican controlled House have a record low approval rating of 10%. TEN percent!!!! Yet, people will act like lemmings and send the same folks back OR the same “stepford” special interest shills who vote the way that they are told. So much for our “House of REPRESENTATIVES”.

@Chins and Richard – so it is about buying the vote.. Not what is right for North Dakota. I personally don’t think that either candidate is right for our state. But I am fairly certain that Heitcamp is the better of the two evils.
To think I used to be a stauch republican.. Oh how times have changed simply due to the people you put in front of me to elect.

We too are the problem…..A bloody 10% (I think it’s even lower by some polls) should be such an embarassment that these great “Statesmen and Stateswomen” should be embarassed so much that they should be saying to each other that they need to fix this crap and get back to working for all the people……But we just keep playing along with this silly exercise called modern election cycles as if it still means something…So nothing changes other than those who contribute the most get the most. Meanwhile everything keeps going to hell because there’s billions poured into propaganda, and billions buying politicians in one form or other. At some point the people will rise up and start marching on capitals, but it looks like it might take another depression before they do….And from the looks of it……That might not be too far off….Especially if the GOP did actually win…

Heitkamp is no treasure. I don’t approve of many things she’s done. I don’t plan to vote for her.
Rick Berg is an abomination. He’s a tumor on Capitol Hill that needs to be scraped off. He’s COMPLETELY OWNED by Big Business, he’ll screw the citizens five times a week and twice on weekends if his Corporate Masters require it–and they DO require it.
If Heitkamp is elected, it’ll be due to folks who aren’t voting FOR Heitkamp, they’re voting AGAINST Rick Berg. Very similar to how Obama won: Folks didn’t vote “for” the corrupt Democrat party, they voted AGAINST the much MORE corrupt and hateful Republican party.
God bless the independent candidates.

Too bad North Dakotans would vote for a ham sandwich if it had an (R) behind it. However, knowing Berg, a ham sandwich WOULD be a better choice.

Oil not the Republican Party is the reason ND is doing well. JD sure likes to take credit for it though. And Rick Berg does not belong in Washington. The only reason he will get votes is because some Rep. only vote Rep.
