Extending utilities to UU property is possible, but complicated

Extending water and sewer service to two properties that some people want the school board to consider as locations for a new high school wouldn’t be difficult, the Hudson Plan Commission was told Thursday night, Aug. 23.

I have a question about the old SCM property. How much a year will it cost to maintain this property, until a building is built there? How much will it cost to heat this empty building? How much in security a year? Right now the property has round the clock security, will it when the district owns the property? I feel this has been done all wrong, the referendum should have been for the property, and a new building. Now if the district buys this property they could be the proud owners of a vacant building they must maintain until the point that a another referendum passes, which may be soon, or could be years down the line.

no kidding— money pit at its finest.
that and taking it off the tax rolls in a time when the city needs more money, finding and paying for 100 people to staff it…
so a huge increase in tax money to schools, less for the city, a large increas in tax to fund the library…wow
no thanks

I’m personally not against this location for a school. However, the school board still has not given a plan for what school will go here, whether middle, jr. high, or sr. high school. Why should the voters approve the purchase when the board can’t even decide what to put on it?
And I still say if they put the football field where the current dog track is located, we could be the only school in the state with inside seating for football games!

3 things
if the dog track was not an option where would the school go?
Also, i would love to see what the voters would do if the referendum question was 3 fold and the second part had te actual pricetag of a new school. I am thinking 80 million. Lets remember they will roll in. updating the other schools. Lastly if I had a choice I would prefer my taxes increase for public safety. This is a tough economy really hard to defend a tax hike for any other reason.

What did the school board purchase the land on UU for in the first place? If they water and sewer lines are such a hassle to install for a school why did they purchase it??

The UU location was a knee-jerk reaction to a piece of property put on the market (I believe it was by Sam Miller, but I could be wrong on that).
A much better site than the UU location is out on hwy. 12, just south of Nor-Lake. There is room for on-site septic system and on-site well, or sewer could be run along the RR tracks all the way into town, as it’s a downhill run all the way. No traffic issues, and plenty of room for athletic fields.
