We were just told in an article a couple weeks ago about housing that the base housing was 96% full. If there are 577 houses and 96% are full with 8 global hawks stationed here, they are going to need thousands of homes if they bring the tankers in, or is the Heralds reports flawed? Makes you wonder.

A great majority of base personnel live in GF, Emerado, Thompson, and Larimore too. Nearly every base you go to, you are told housing is at near capacity. What you have to realize is that for as many people moving in, nearly the same amount are moving OUT. It’s a balancing act. How do I know? Because we are an AF family playing this very game right now. When we got to GF in 2007, there was no houses available for our rank and family size. So we chose to buy a house in town. We moved in early 2011 and sold our home. We were lucky enough to get a home at our new base, and it’s about 98% full here right now with people moving in (and out!) constantly.
You’re being only *slightly* over dramatic with your “thousands of homes” estimate. There used to be a LOT more people out at the base than there are right now and the base and surrounding communities handled it just fine. I’m sure there are homes slated to be built or being built right now because they were already budgeted for years ago. That’s why parts of housing have been moved to the reservation or demolished, it was all put into motion a long time ago.
We are hoping that GF does get the new tankers because we want to come back to GF and retire there when it is time. Right now, without an actual airframe, my husband doesn’t have a job there. We miss nearly everything about GF (except those -50 days!) and are hopeful they’ll get the new contract.
