Farmington city officials have considered a noise ordinance before, but after the past weekend a few council members are more serious about getting one in place. Continue Reading

An Ordinance? Really? Dew Days had bands in the downtown area, where are the complaints for those nights? I live 3 blocks from 3rd Street and I could hear the music loud and clear. There are way more homes in the downtown area. I didn’t complain, why? Dew Days is good for businesses in Farmington, businesses that pay taxes. So welcome Tailgaters, we hope you thrive and do well, just keep down the noise. That’s a nice welcome…

I would be pretty angry if I had just gathered up a boat load of cash to save the American Legion, and then within less than 20 minutes of obtaining the liquor licence, the city decided to change the rules affecting the business. The same pattern has existed for many years:
1. Legion throws big outdoor event.
2. People complain about noise.
3. City pretends to do something.
4. Nothing is done.
Any adjustment to this pattern just looks like discrimination against the new owners, now that they are no longer a non-profit community institution. From what I can tell from the parking situation and the noise, Hairball is one of the most profitable events on the books. Those books were likely reviewed when valuing the business before the purchase.
This is just another step towards showing any company that wishes to develop in Farmington that the business climate isn’t tolerable of either outsiders or change, even if that change is meant to save us from another abandoned building. When the city is unable to stomach playing by one set of rules for everyone, it shows the Targets and the Walmarts of the world that Farmington is not ready to cast off the culture of nepotism and cronyism and sit at the adult table with the rest of the metro.
