SWAT team members use ‘simunitions’ during annual training

The Grand Forks SWAT members shot at each other, carried cement blocks and took mental and physical tests Tuesday as part of their annual August extended training. Continue Reading

“In 2006, the SWAT team helped in a stand-off in East Grand Forks in which a man fired at police with an assault rifle. A Minnesota State Patrol trooper shot and wounded the man, who then took his own life.
Last summer, the SWAT team assisted in the attempt to arrest Rodney Brossart and his wife, daughter and three sons near Lakota, N.D., in the conflict over a neighbors three cows with calves. ”
In short, paramilitary police are nothing but a waste of taxpayer dollars in this region. In the first example, Minnesota Highway Patrol did the heavy lifting, and in the second, a paramilitary response wasn’t justified at all.

That’s just two examples…Just in the past couple years they’ve been called for a few stand offs. One had a mother and child inside…..I bet they don’t think it’s a waste of money to have a well trained SWAT team available….
By the by Shurk…Aren’t you one of the people who gets all excited after some big shooting and people call for stricter control? You can’t have it both ways….A free for all when it comes to getting arms, and nothing between the public and the head cases when their time bomb goes off and start to shoot or take hostages…

It’s not like these guys are getting special pay for being on the S.W.A.T Team, or are just sitting around waiting to get called out. They are your everyday officers patrolling the streets, they have just had specific training in this specialized area. In essence, the tax dollars spent on them isn’t worth getting all worked up over. Sure, they only mentioned two call outs in the article, but they get called out much more often than that. There are many smaller agencies in the area that just don’t have the manpower to handle certain things. When that happens they rely on these highly trained officers to assist them, and in the end, probably saves lives.
