Biden: ‘Republican obstructionism slowed progress’
August 21, 2012 at 9:27 am in Grand Forks Herald
Vice President Joe Biden pounced on Republicans, with his main targets Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, during an early afternoon downtown Minneapolis rally. Continue Reading

That statement is revisionist history. When Obama was elected, Repubicans said their role was to obstruct everything he tried to do. Everything. They have fulfilled that promise, and now, blame Obama for not getting people together. Jeez, can’t you see what’s happened? Take the blinders off.

I’m not a Obama guy, I’m not a Romney guy…I’m a Ron Paul guy so take this comment for what it’s worth. Comparing Biden’s slip ups to Akin’s is comparing apples to kangaroos. Slightly different…no doubt Biden often sticks his foot in is mouth, but Akin who somehow doesn’t seem to understand sexual assault on females (which unfortunately is probably the norm with males especially Republicans in congress) its not even on close or on the same planet. Let’s face it Romney, Ryan, and others would love to legislate a woman’s lady parts but they are making a hasty retreat a turn the other way- due Akin letting the cat out of the bag…trust me, they are all thinking “boy am I glad he said that 1st, cause I’ve always said the same thing privately” The fact of the matter is Washington is broken- but it’s broken not because it’s Washington- but because America is broken as well. And that’s not because were not conservative enough or progressive enough…but it’s because we’ve lost the ability to compromise…listen and argue in a respectable manner. Don’t get me wrong our Fore Fathers would have some nasty debates but I believe they had more reason in the end.
Trickle down economics has never been proven to work- even though the Republicans would have you believe otherwise. Just because the Job Creators aka rich have had more money they’ve never shown the propensity to improve those below them. And yet trying to utilize the Federal government to create jobs while it has proven to work for the short term for depression area works projects has proven to be a disaster otherwise.
So there you have it…2 choices both horrible. Enjoy- we can’t seem to get away from these sub par candidates. Oh while were at it…how’s all that spending on the war on drugs going- Both Republicans and Democrats love it. I love how we just keep throwing money hoping it will fix it without really looking at how to curtail the problem…oh well, but it must create jobs.

Republicans want the government off your back unless you’re a women and then they want you to be forced to bear your rapist’s child. That guy doesn’t deserve to have himself propagated. The Republican party just approved a plank in their platform that endorses women being forced into motherhood if their pregnancy is from rape or incest. What kind of people would do that to a woman? I can’t even imagine having to do that, but that’s what the Republican Party wants women to have to be faced with. Barbaric. Having the option of an early abortion is a humane response to this. Even the morning after pill is not approved by Romney and Ryan.

Here’s the part that I wholeheartedly agree with:
“The fact of the matter is Washington is broken- but it’s broken not because it’s Washington- but because America is broken as well. Don’t get me wrong our Fore Fathers would have some nasty debates but I believe they had more reason in the end. ”
Remember that George Washington warned against factionalism (political parties). In the end, some people put allegiance to party before doing what is best for the US. Why do people think compromise is weak? If we can’t learn to compromise, we are going to destroy this nation. I am going to get “dislikes” from both democrats and republicans, but I don’t care. There are major problems with both parties and neither side is willing to admit them!

You’re right, Melody. The old line about the wife telling her husband of 30 years of how she used to sit next to him while he drove and he replies, “well, I didn’t move”. I believe the left has been moving further to the left socially and economically inch by inch. JFK would be a Republican now. He lowered taxes, was pro-life, and the speech, “Ask not…”. This is why both sides have problems negotiating because they begin so far apart. What either Party must do is start small and try to win the other side over. After all, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”.

You’ve got it backwards lowrent. By objective analyses Obama is more conservative than Ronald Reagan. It’s the right that has shifted. Kennedy’s speech about separating his religion from government would be seen as ultra-liberalism by both sides these days — sadly!
Here’s today’s reality: A handful of extraordinarily rich people are in the process of buying the election. The Koch brothers are at the forefront, and a key “architect” is Karl Rove. You can thank the Citizens United ruling (plus regulatory indifference) for this — and reasonable Americans should be horrified whatever their political leanings.

Justasec, you continually write posts that imply that the Republicans are trying to “buy” the election. What you ignore is that in both the 2008 and 2010 elections the Democrats received more support from Corporations and their executives than the Republicans. While I won’t be voting for many Republicans because of their completely out of touch social platform, the idea that Democrats are free of the influence of big dollar donors is delusional. Run some quick searches on campaign contributions and you’ll quickly discover that Democrats receive huge contributions from single source donors.
You may also want to revisit the Clinton Presidency, where economic success was achieved through tax cuts and spending cuts negotiated with a Republican House and Senate. The policy of tax and spend has never proven to be successful. You could redistribute the entire wealth (not just income) of the top 10% of this country and fund the Federal budget for less than a year. We have trillion dollar spending deficits. Bill gates has about 60 billion dollars of wealth and if you took every dollar he has you’d barely put a dent in the spending deficit for this year let alone the total federal debt. The total federal debt is now just short of 16 trillion dollars. You’d need to take 100% of the wealth (again, not just income) from 267 “Bill Gates” just eliminate the current debt. Sorry, but the average wealth of the top 1% is only 15 million; you will be well into the middle class before you have enough assets to cover the current federal debt. And don’t forget that next year we’ll have to do it all over again. Even President Obama concedes that his “tax the rich” plan will have insignificant impact on the yearly spending deficits and the federal debt; but it is sure a great pitch for getting votes.
I never would have imagine typing this, but I wish we had President Clinton back. In the upcoming election Romney is a heck of a lot closer to President Clinton than Obama is to President Clinton.

Joe, your point is well taken, but if you read all my posts you will see that I have lamented the dishonesty from both sides, as well as the influence of money — especially since Citizens United. In fact, the post you responded to had a link which showed how both sides are funded — and I invited readers to draw their own conclusions.
My conclusion is that super pacs are indeed trying to buy the election — and the right has the advantage at this time due to several extraordinarily rich people pouring in money for their own ends (“business expense” as Mayer puts it — see: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/08/27/120827fa_fact_mayer ).
If I could wave a magic wand (a metaphor — I’m not superstitious!), the media would develop a sudden zeal for using their 1st amendment rights to expose political dishonesty. In addition, there would be the category “none of the above” on every ballot (candidates and issues), and there would be no winner without a true majority (so run-off elections or complete do-overs might be required). That is the only scenario I can think of where honesty could be enforced.
In the meantime, I’d sure be heartened if We The People took more responsibility in holding the liars accountable. Pragmatically, I wish our reps in Congress could accept compromise more and get something done. Both sides are guilty of obstructionism, but in my (as objective as possible) analysis, the republicans are far worse than the dems on that count.
Finally, I wish more folks would remember that Karl Rove was the “architect” of the Bush victories. If they remembered that, then they would likely ponder his current “architectural” ambitions a bit more deeply. Do we really want him and the Koch brothers deciding this election?

If you don’t HATE Republicans, there is no place for you in the Democratic Party and vice versa. I have good friends who are Republicans and good friends who are Democrats, and some friends who are REPULSED by how politics have evolved.
We do have a lot of problems in our country, but if hating the other side and trying to prove them wrong becomes more important than solving the problems, then we might as well throw in the towel now. Those are fine platitudes. Acceptance of your premise would require that one would have to believe that one idea has as much merit as any other no matter how foolish it might be. No Brain…middle ground isn’t always the holy grail…but you can’t be afraid to go there to get things done. Brain, I’m just sick of negativity. I am for more local control of just about anything because local seems more efficient to me, except for our defense. When you get involved in politics locally, people get to know you and even if they don’t agree with everything you stand for, they can still work with you if you have integrity and are honest. On the national level, people are horrible to each other. The only way they can get elected is to hurl insults at one another, and usually they are full of half truths – on both sides. This is happening at the state level with Berg and Heitkamp.

Clearly, one of the problems with political parties is the tone they set. The Democrats try to create class warfare by accusing the wealthy of not paying enough taxes and balancing the budget on the backs of the middle class. They make you think that government helping you is your only hope. What is this argument going to accomplish? All it accomplishes is hating the other side and getting more people to become jealous of those who have made money.
The Republicans create fear that the socialist liberals are going to take everything away from you and redistribute your hard earned wealth. What does that do? It destroys community. It makes people less likely to give to worthy local charitable causes that don’t rely on government funding…then they fail because everyone is so worried about holding on to their money.
Both scenarios sound awful and create hate for the other side. When in reality, we have a huge deficit that both sides created. Now each side needs to give a lot in order to fix it, but that won’t happen, because which ever side wins, they will continue to perpetuate hate, with the other side blocking anything they try to implement.
Think I am the only one who thinks this way? Hardly. Just because they are not viewing comments on area voices doesn’t mean they don’t exist. People are sick of politics as usual. Something has to be done to reengage the majority of middle class Americans who are sickened by this tone.

Justasec, sorry, I couldn’t reply to our exchange above, I ran out of reply room. We have more common ground than I would have anticipated; my short-sightedness. Where we may differ is I don’t view Rove or the Koch brothers as any worse than the huge donation that come from public employee unions to the Democrats; collectively public employee union donations make the super-pacs look small. Check out the following link: http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/list.php . Note I said they were no worse, not that they were better. What gets my goat is the implication that one party or the other is influenced to a greater extent by big donors and, that the Democrats are perceived as receiving less dollars from big business than the Republicans (when in truth they received more in the last two election cycles). Unfortunately, the solution (in my opinion) is an educated electorate. It drives me crazy when people are interviewed and they are asked who they voted for and the response is “candidate X because he/she was endorsed by party Y”. I would rather hear someone say I voted for candidate X because he is against owning white poodles, at least that person found an issue they could identify with and took the time to find out which candidate held their position.

Justasc, you are correct, I don’t think that Super Pacs were included in the link I provided; my link is to direct campaign contributions. I will even agree that in terms of Super Pacs Romney is ahead. But in terms of total dollars, it isn’t even close, President Obama is far ahead. The latest Federal Election Commission report reflects that President Obama’s campaign had received 348.4 million in contributions and Romney had received 193 million. Not included within Super Pac money are the millions of dollars in government employee funds and contributions from other labor unions that are received. Both parties receive and are influenced by big donations that ultimately shape their policies, regardless of the source of those contributions.
The materials you have linked to are the summary of an interview and article of a writer for the New Yorker Magazine. The article focuses exclusively on Super Pacs while ignoring the all other sources of campaign funding, leaving the reader with the impression that President Obama is hopelessly outmatched in fund raising, a very incorrect impression. The irony is that while Super Pacs are associated with “big business” the largest are really funded by individuals. When direct campaign contributions are reviewed, President Obama still leads in contributions from Wall Street firms, lawyers and most large industries. My irritation is the continued insinuation that Romney is the candidate of big business when in truth President Obama receives more in contributions from those donors. I don’t agree with the political platforms of those behind most of the Super Pacs, but to imply that Romney is somehow more susceptible to “influence by big business” is in my opinion not correct.

Right on. It used to be that Republicans were full of Christian charity for the disadvantaged believing that the poor will always be with us and that it was the right thing to do to help out. Now the poor are called lazy recipients of public tax dollars who deserve our contempt for not having a job. Now government is only to provide for tax breaks for the wealthy. All other social safety net programs are on the list to either be eliminated, downsized, or transferred to the private sector. I believe that government has a role to play in helping the poor.
