LETTER: Pro-lifers should help care for babies
August 18, 2012 at 3:19 am in The Daily Republic
In the recent debate about abortion, biblical verses being waved like red flags, the most important result is sort of glossed over. Who is going to raise this unwanted baby to adulthood in the way he or she deserves? Continue Reading

To the writer of this letter, Ms. Anne Perrin, while I assume you did not mean to imply such, I gotta ask anyway, how does your argument NOT look like it is completely based on financial considerations.
We can debate the issue of when life begins or when it might be morally correct to abort a living fetus (rape, incest, danger to life of mother, baby malformed and or terminal). We can discuss how a woman’s right to her own health decisions can render null and void the rights of the unborn child. We can even debate the position that back-alley and dangerous abortions would become rampant if made illegal. All those arguments may have some merit.
What I gather from your letter however is that it is simply cheaper and more cost effective to eliminate a possible drain on society.
I vote to take care of any child that needs help the same way we do now. I’d even be willing to pay more taxes to do it. Trim all the fraud and waste from current programs set up to do this and you’ll probably find plenty of money available.
What about all the money we spend on the elderly, handicapped and disabled? Are they a drain on society as well?
I know you probably meant well but this issue should not be about the money.

The issue (which the writer mentioned twice) is that the children are unwanted. The financial burden to the (in most cases) single mother is a statistical fact so like it or not it IS about the money but the important thing is they are unwanted.
