Nonprofit puts Superior Street mansion up for sale
August 16, 2012 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
To reduce costs, the Human Development Center wants to sell the Superior Street mansion that houses its administrative offices and a drop-in center.

It’s a great building and I am anxious to see what happens to it and also to see where Harmony moves to and how it functions in its new spot.
To say the outreach program “outgrew” the building a few years back is a laughable spin. The outreach program moved from a comfortable 12 or so rooms in this building to a cramped 4-5 rooms. Many people suspect the move was made because outreach workers are considered the lowest on the food chain at HDC.

You should use the full quote in context, not just take part of it in order to make your argument.
“The building costs a lot to run and doesn’t work well for administration,” Vogt said. “It’s just not a good fit. We used to use it for outreach, but they outgrew that. So they moved in administration temporarily 1½ years ago.”
Meaning that they moved the administration department temporarily into the building 1 1/2 years ago until they were able to sell it. Thus moving the outreach dept from 12 to 5 rooms in that building.

Being a Non-Profit does not mean they don’t need to make money, so them making money off of the sale of a building does not mean a darn thing.
You must think that filing for a non-profit means that everything is free and you don’t need to reinvest back into the program.

The city’s records are always lowball and never very recent. It’s weird that DNT even put the number into the article. HDC did put in a lot of money to revamp the place.
I don’t know why you “Wink Wink” HDC as a non profit. Is it because of the asking price of this building or other reasons? As a supporter of many non profits I would want any agency to get what the free market will give them for something they are selling. If they want to list it high and can get a buyer, more power to them.

The problem I have with non profits is the law. If you go to the property search you will see they are not taxed on the property because they are a non profit. They use city services but are not taxed. Look up some of the properties owned by the Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment. Multimillion dollar single properties around town and no property tax. Yet these facilities use more than average city services. That’s the beef many of us have. If these properties were privately used at least the city could collect revenue from property taxes. We need to change laws so that at least some revenue can be derived from these properties,

How does HDC, or any other non-profit use “more than average city services”?

I think he means compared to the average family of 4. Compare it to any other similarly-sized business and I think it will be right on par.

Evidently, Vogt isn’t familiar with selling points…

Hmmm? The city is selling property again?
I wonder if this also requires approval by the city council?
If so, I will bet that Sharla Gardner will rally to get her “croonies” to side with her that $565K just isn’t enough. Maybe she can get M.J. to argue that if this gets sold to a “questionable” person or group that they will turn it into something negative (without consulting the purchasers of course) and fight the city.

“Non-Profit”, surely is a questionable title. Corporation may not make money on paper, but what are the salaries of controllers..?
