When you get to regions the competition is a lot tougher than playing weak Resorters league teams. Perfect example is beating a team 5 times in one year and not giving up a single run in those games. They should schedule more games against better competition so they know what they need to do to beat the good teams.
When do you propose they play these extra games? Having played amatuer (town team) ball in the past (15 years), it is hard enough at times to get a team together for your regular season League games, which are almost always on weekends. Adding exhibitions would more than likely have to be played during the week and that is if you can find teams that can get their players together as well. These players are not the Beetles or pros, they are just “average joes” playing the game they love. They all have families, jobs and other commitments outside of baseball.
Beaver, i know all about it. I played Resorters for 12 years along with a couple trips to state. Back then, there were 3 teams in each division that were really good and you never knew who would go to regions. You knew what your team needed to do to get there. Now there are only 3 teams in Resorters that would do anything at regions. Look at the size of the rosters for just Carlos and Miltona. They are both over 20. Getting the guys shouldnt be a problem. a lot of the guys who play, work at places where they have no problem getting time off. I guess my original point was you really dont know what you have for a team when the other teams are so weak, you beat them up every weekend. By scheduling some games against tougher competition outside of Resorters, gives you a better idea of what kind of team you have. That is a big thing to know in case you do get to regions and state.
But the issue may not be your team, the issue may be trying to find other “quality” teams that can get guys together on a Wednesday or Friday night or Saturday afternoon. I played 15 years in the Hi-10 (back when regions only took the champions from the leagues), and we would have loved to have scheduled more games as well as we had a full roster and players were sitting/seeing limited action during league games that we could have got action for in exhibition games. Jobs out of town that only allow them to get back to the team on weekends, weddings and family functions on Saturdays, etc., make scheduling exhibition games almost impossible.
Good job Cougars! I don’t think they need to look too hard at changing their schedules around. If I remember right, this team has made it to state 5 or 6 years in a row. Not making it this year does not mean they aren’t good enough to be there. They just weren’t good enough that day. Work hard again next year, enjoy the game, and bring it next post-season.
