As I recall the location was described a the outskirts of a dying midwestern city. Great PR.

I remember watching ‘You’ll Like My Mother’, when I was about 12. I was scared to death! The movie brought even more mystery to the Big Mansion.
The movie also made it impossible for me to watch the Waltons ever again. John Boy just wasn’t the same.
