Waterspout was (briefly) Duluth’s first tornado

Some guys on a boat docked in the harbor saw three waterspouts touch down when the Joshua Hatfield blew off its moorings back in the late ’80′s. The sirens sounded but they had already come and gone by then. I was living on Park Point at the time (the ship ran aground just behind our house), and saw the 100′ white pines in our yard blown perfectly horizontal about halfway down their trunks.
